XXIII Troféus Central Comics – Vencedores / Winners

A revelação dos resultados do XXIII Troféus Central Comics foram ontem anunciados no 4º Maia BD, em data que celebra o 25º aniversário deste prémio, o único no país em que são os fãs e o grande público que determinam os finalistas e vencedores. Este ano, estava nomeada em 4 categorias, através de diversas colaborações.
É com prazer que vejo serem premiados os álbuns Tales from Nevermore (Melhor Produção), da Ala dos Livros, pelo editor Ricardo Magalhães, pelo qual fui a responsável pela produção do conceito visual e design da edição, mais a sua balonagem; Cadáver Esquisito! (Melhor Publicação Independente), da Arga Warga, com coord. de Daniel Maia; e inVISÍVEIS (Melhor Antologia), da CerciOeiras, com coord. de Hugo Pinto, em que colaboro com Daniel Maia.

Adicionalmente, fui finalista em Melhor Webcomic, com a BD ‘Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro’, que foi vice-campeã na categoria.

The results of the XXIII Central Comics Trophies were announced yesterday at the 4th Maia BD, on a date that celebrates the 25th anniversary of this award, the only one in the country where fans and the general public determine the finalists and winners. This year, she was nominated in 4 categories, through various collaborations.
It is with pleasure that I see being awarded the graphic novels Tales from Nevermore (Best Production), from Ala dos Livros, edited by Ricardo Magalhães, of which I was directly responsable for the book design, balloning and visual concept of the edition; Cadáver Esquisito! (Best Independent Publication), from Arga Warga, coord. by Daniel Maia; and inVISÍVEIS (Best Anthology), from CerciOeiras, coord. by Hugo Pinto, in which I collaborate with Daniel Maia.

Additionally, I was a finalist for Best Webcomic, with the comic ‘Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro’, and placed as runner-up in the category.

XXII Troféus Central Comics – Vencedor / Winner

No passado dia 24 de Maio, no 3º festival MaiaBD, teve lugar a cerimónia de entrega dos 22º Troféus Central Comics, o único prémio de mérito da banda desenhada portuguesa em que os próprios leitores e grande público determinam os vencedores.
No passado fui agraciada por nomeações e por vitórias neste prémio, pelo que fico sempre grata por qualquer reconhecimento dos meus esforços na área. Este ano somo mais uma consagração, ao lado dos colegas do TágIIde – ex-alunos e colegas do col. Tágide –, para Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade, que venceu a categoria de Melhor Antologia. Este é o primeiro livro que estreia esta nova categoria nos TCC, mas é também a segunda distinção para Melhor Antologia do livro. Muito obrigada a todos os nossos leitores!

Em Abril, Cravos Mil, publicado pela Câmara Municipal de Montijo e coordenado por Daniel Maia, participo com a ilustração de capa e contracapa, para além de assegurar o grafismo, paginação etc. Originalmente ia participar com uma curta BD, mas outros compromissos e a necessidade de assegurar a produção do livro impediu-me de contribuir também desse modo.
Foi uma bonita conclusão do ciclo de vida deste álbum antológico, depois de 1 ano da sua edição, e que está prestes a esgotar as 500 unidades que foram impressas. O grupo TágIIde continuará agora a solo, com nova antologia este ano.

On May 24th, at the 3rd MaiaBD comics festival, the 22nd Trophies Central Comics were awarded, the only award for merit in Portuguese comics in which the readers themselves and the general public determine the winners.
In the past, I have been honored with nominations and wins for this award, so I am always grateful for any recognition of my efforts in the field. This year, I have yet another vitory, alongside my colleagues from TágIIde – former students and colleagues from the Tágide collectivity – for April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom, which won the Best Anthology category. This is the first book to debut in this new category at TCC, but it is also the second award for Best Anthology of the book. Many thanks to all our readers!

In April, Carnation Showers was published by Montijo City Council and coordinated by Daniel Maia, and I participated with the cover and backcover illustration, in addition to ensuring the book design etc. Originally, I was going to participate with a short comic myself, but other commitments and the need to ensure the book’s production prevented me from contributing in this way.
It was a beautiful conclusion to the life cycle of this anthology book, after 1 year of its release, and right when it’s about to sell out the 500 copies that were printed. TágIIde will now continue on solo, with a new anthology this year.

XXII Troféus Central Comics – Finalista / Nominee

The XXII Troféus Central Comics is holding its merit awards for comic boos and authors published in 2024 in Portugal. This is the second oldest ongoing award in the country and the only one in which readers nominate the finalists and determine the winners, according to their preferences.
This year I have a few works as finalists in several categories, such as Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, finalist in Best Independent Publication and Best Short Comic, and Abril, Cravos Mil, finalist in Best Anthology. These works are up for your vote until May 20th, and the winners will be revealed later this month at the 3rd MaiaBD festival.

6º Prémios Bandas Desenhadas - Vencedores / Winners

A antologia Abril, Cravos Mil venceu recentemente o 6º Prémios Bandas Desenhadas como Melhor Antologia. Esta é uma agradável surpresa para o grupo TágIIde, com que eu e o autor Daniel Maia colaborámos como artistas convidados, tendo eu sido responsável pela ilustração de capa e grafismo da edição.
Além disso, a história “A Insubordinação mais Bela” por Daniel Maia, incluída na antologia, foi finalista na categoria Melhor BD Curta.

The anthology April, Carnation Showers recently won the 6th Bandas Desenhadas Awards as Best Anthology. This was pleasant surprise for the TágIIde group, with which author Daniel Maia and I collaborated as guest artists, with me being responsible for the books’ cover artwork and design.
Furthermore, the story “The Most Beautiful Insubordination” by Daniel Maia, included in the anthology, was also finalist as Best Short Comic.

XXI Troféus Central Comics – Finalista / Finalist

Em jeito de conclusão de actividade, restava ao colectivo Tágide (2019-2023) a passagem pelo último prémio de mérito da banda desenhada portuguesa alusivo ao ano editorial transacto – o XXI Troféus Central Comics – o qual realizou recentemente a fase de pré-eliminatória e recebe votos finais nos próximos dez dias, até 3af, 21/5.
No Troféus Central Comics, são os leitores e profissionais do sector quem determina, com os seus votos online e de acordo com as suas preferências, as obras finalistas e os eventuais vencedores, que este ano vão ser relevados no 2º MaiaBD, no Domingo, 26/5.

Pela 4a vez, desde 2020, o fanzine Outras Bandas #9 é finalista na categoria Melhor Publicação Independente, e reúne ainda outras três nomeações para Melhor Obra Curta; nomeadamente, para “A Câmara”, de Yves Darbos, “Longa Vida”, de Daniel Maia, e “Luar Fatal”, de Henrique Gandum.
Ao todo, estas indicações perfazem dezasseis nomeações para Tágide (incluindo duas vitórias) em prémios nacionais.

Adicionalmente, o webcomic com Daniel Maia, para FC Porto, FCP-BD: 2022/2023, foi nomeado na nova categoria Melhor Webcomic.

As its ultimate activity, the Tágide collective (2019-2023) had left one final passage in the last merit award for Portuguese comics alluding to the previous editorial year – the XXI Central Comics Trophies –, which recently held the elimination round and gathers its final votes over the next ten days, until Tuesday, May 21th.
At Central Comics Trophies, it is the readers and the field professionals who determine, with their online votes and according to their preferences, the finalist and eventual winners, which this year will be presented at the 2nd MaiaBD comics festival, on Sunday, May 26th.

For the 4th time since 2020, the fanzine Outras Bandas #9 is a finalist in Best Independent Publication, and also has three other nominations for Best Short Work; namely, for “Fatal Moonlight”, by Henrique Gandum, “Long Life”, by Daniel Maia, and “The Camera”, by Yves Darbos.
In total, these selections make up sixteen nominations for Tágide (including two victories) in portuguese awards.

Adicionally, my webcomic with Daniel Maia, for FC Porto, FCP-BD: 2022/2023, was nominated for the brand new category Best Webcomic.

II TCC:HD – Vencedores / Winners

O II Troféus Central Comics: Heróis da Década revelaram ontem os vencedores determinados pelos leitores e tenho o prazer de partilhar que a banda desenhada “O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos” foi eleito vencedor de Melhor Obra Curta da Década. Obrigada aos leitores que votaram no trabalho!

A BD foi escrita por José de Matos-Cruz, adaptando para arte sequencial as personagens e mundo ficcional que ele criou em 2004, desenhada por Daniel Maia, com apoio de arte-final por Daniel Henriques, e sequências adicionais por mim, mais cameos especiais pelos mestres José Garcês (1928-2020) e José Ruy (1930-2022). O arranque do trabalho integrou a exposição retrospectiva no 23º Amadora BD e a coedição Kafre/Arga Warga, de 2017, venceu o XVI TCC para Melhor Obra Curta em 2018, ficando em 2º lugar na categoria Melhor Publicação Independente.
Este ano, há planos para reeditar a BD em versão expandida, em formato álbum, para fazer parelha com a edição "irmã", Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados.

Os outros vencedores do II TCC:HD são: Watchmen (Melhor Publicação Estrangeira da Década), Balada para Sophie (Melhor Publicação Portuguesa da Década), Filipe Melo (Melhor Argumentista Português da Década), Luís Louro (Melhor Desenhador Português da Década), Filipe Andrade (Melhor Autor Internacional da Década) e Crónicas de Enerelis: Volume 03 - Sombras (Melhor Publicação Independente da Década).

The II Central Comics Trophies: Heroes of the Decade revealed yesterday the winners determined by the readers and I am pleased to share that the comic “Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes” was chosen as the winner of Best Short Work of the Decade. Thank you to the readers who voted for the work!

The comic was written by José de Matos-Cruz, adapting the characters and fictional world he created in 2004 to sequential art, drawn by Daniel Maia, with artwork support by Daniel Henriques, and additional sequences by me, plus special cameos by masters José Garcês (1928-2020) and José Ruy (1930-2022). The start of the work was part of the retrospective exhibition at the 23rd Amadora BD and the Kafre/Arga Warga co-edition, from 2017, won the XVI TCC for Best Short Work in 2018, placing 2nd in the Best Independent Publication category.
This year, there are plans to reissue the comic in an expanded version, in album format, to pair it with its "sister" edition, Auroral Boreal in Shared Reflexions.

The other winners of II TCC:HD are: Watchmen (Best Foreign Publication of the Decade), Balad for Sophie (Best Portuguese Publication of the Decade), Filipe Melo (Best Portuguese Writer of the Decade), Luís Louro (Best Portuguese Artist of the Decade), Filipe Andrade (Best International Author of the Decade) and Chronicles of Enerelis: Volume 03 - Shadows (Best Independent Publication of the Decade).

O 2º Troféu Central Comics: Heróis da Década decorre entre 25-31 de Janeiro e realiza nova votação para homenagear os favoritos entre as melhores obras e autores publicados em Portugal na última década, que foram premiados pelos leitores nos Troféus Central Comics. É uma distinção original, única no mundo, e engloba pela primeira vez a minha entrada no sector da BD.

O TCC:HD difere dos prémios anuais na medida em que só existem 7 categorias: Melhor Publicação Portuguesa da Década (todos os livros), Melhor Publicação Estrangeira da Década, Melhor Publicação Independente da Década (pequena imprensa e fanzines), Melhor Desenhador da Década e Melhor Argumentista da Década, Melhor Obra Curta da Década e Melhor Autor Internacional da Década.

Sou finalista, com Daniel Maia e José de Matos-Cruz, na categoria Melhor Obra Curta da Década com a BD “O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos,” editada no comic do mesmo título. Obrigada pelo seu VOTO!

The 2nd Trophies Central Comics: Heroes of the Decade happens between January 25-31st and carries out a new vote to award the favorites among the best graphic novels and authors published in Portugal in the last decade, who were honored by readers in the anuals Trophies Central Comics. It is an original award, unique in the world, and for the first time encompasses my entry into the comics sector.

The TCC:HD differs from the annual awards in that there are only 7 categories: Best Portuguese Publication of the Decade (includes all books), Best Foreign Publication of the Decade, Best Independent Publication of the Decade (small press books and fanzines), Best Artist of the Decade and Best Writer of the Decade, Best Short Comic of the Decade and Best International Author of the Decade.

I am a finalist, with Daniel Maia and José de Matos-Cruz, in the Best Short Comic of the Decade category with the comic “The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes,” published in the comic of the same title. Thank you for your VOTE!

Celebrando 6 anos de Formação em BD | Celebrating 6 years of Comics teaching

Hoje faz 6 anos que comecei, de forma inesperada, a ensinar storytelling e arte sequencial. Lia banda desenhada desde criança e fui exposta a uma grande variedade de géneros desde cedo, mas nunca pensei em me aventurar nisso antes de me juntar com meu companheiro, o autor Daniel Maia. Seguindo os seus incentivos para criação em BD e desafios de editoras independentes, comecei a aprender o ofício sozinha, para entender o que poderia fazer na área. Foi então que, do nada, surgiu a oportunidade de ministrar alguns cursos de BD…

Já tinha sido artista convidada de Penim Loureiro durante o 1º Curso de Banda Desenhada no Museu Bordalo Pinheiro (2015) e ensinado uma breve masterclass sobre coloração para BD, em Verve Digital (2017), ao lado de Daniel Maia, mas o primeiro grande desafio foi realizar o 2º módulo do II Curso de BD no Museu Bordalo Pinheiro (2018), a convite de Penim. A turma era pequena, felizmente, mas muito envolvida. De seguida, levei conhecimentos recentemente adquiridos para um currículo completo e original da minha criação com +50h, a convite do Departamento de Cultura do Montijo. Ali, lecionei o 1º e 2º BD Montijo: Iniciação à Arte Sequencial (de início ia fazer apenas um curso, mas a inesperada procura levou ao 2º), com turmas de 15 alunos cada, entre gente nova e mais adulta, a maioria dos quais estreantes absolutos. Também tive a honra de apresentar ali os autores Penim Loureiro e Paulo Monteiro como artistas convidados.
O sucesso desta formação levou a um 3º curso entre 2019-2020, novamente com 15 alunos, onde o escritor/professor Pedro Moura foi o artista convidado. Nesses anos, criei também um workshop mais curto, Fundamentais da BD, que ministrei no 12º BDteca – Salão de BD de Odemira (2019), a convite da Biblioteca Municipal de Odemira, e no Liceu de Alcochete (2020), a cerca de 20 jovens estudantes no total.
Embora a pandemia mundial tenha me refreado, em 2022 fui artista convidada no 3º Curso de BD no Museu Bordalo Pinheiro e foi também recentemente convidada a ministrar um workshop de dois dias no 1º Festival de Fanzines e BD de Alpiarça, a convite da Biblioteca Municipal de Alpiarça e Associação Tentáculo, para dez alunos adolescentes.

Tudo isto é muito bem, mas o que realmente me enche de orgulho é reconhecer que devido aos meus ensinamentos – e aos seus próprios esforços – vários ex-alunos saíram das minhas formações aptos a ganhar prémios e concursos. É algo que me permite constatar que devo ter feito algo certo!... E além desses dez talentos, muitos outros têm a possibilidade de criar BD e se esforçar para um dia alcançarem o próprio sucesso na área. O que mais podia uma professora pedir!??

Dado que recentemente virei o meu foco para o lado criativo do sector, salvo situações imprevistas que o justifiquem actualmente não tenho planos de voltar a ensinar. Sinto que fiz o suficiente nesse departamento. Eu própria tive a minha quota de nomeações e prémios e, embora não seja algo que me mova, espero que os meus próximos projetos possam voltar a captar a atenção dos leitores. Mais uma vez, seria algo que me faria pensar que estarei a fazer algo de certo ;)

Today marks six years since I began, very unexpectedly, teaching storytelling and sequential art. I read graphic novels since childhood and was exposed to a wide variety of genres early on, but never really thought on dabbling in it before getting together with my life partner, comics artist Daniel Maia. Following his nudges toward creating comics and challenges from indie publishers, I started learning the craft by myself, so as to understand what I could do in the field. And then, out of the blue, the opportunity came to teach a few comics courses…

I had already been a guest artist in Penim Loureiro’s 1st Comics Course in Museum Bordalo Pinheiro (2015) and taught a brief masterclass on comics colouring in Verve Digital (2017), alongside Daniel Maia, but my first big challenge was to conduct the 2nd module of the II Comics Course in Museum Bordalo Pinheiro (2018), at the invitation of Penim. The class was small, fortunately, but very engaging. Straight away, I carried by recently gained knowledge to a full +50h original comics curriculum of my creation, at the invitation of Montijo’s culture department. There, I taught the 1st and 2nd BD Montijo: Initiation to Sequental Art (originally I was just going to do one course, but the high demand lead to a 2nd), with classes of 15 students each, from old and new, and most of which being absolute newcomers. I was also honored to present authors Penim Loureiro and Paulo Monteiro as guest artists, there.
The success of this formation lead to a 3rd course between 2019-2020, again with 15 students, where writer/teacher Pedro Vieira Moura was the guest artist. In those same years, I also created a shorter workshop, Comics Fundamentals, that I taught at the 12º BDteca – Odemira Comics Salon (2019), after invitation from Odemira Municipal Library, and at Alcochete Highschool (2020), to about 20 young students combined.
Although the worldwide pandemic broke my stride, I was recently invited to teach a brief two day workshop at the 1st Alpiarça Fanzines and Comics Festival, at the invitation of Alpiarça Municipal Library and Association Tentáculo, in 2023, for about ten teen students.

This is all very fine and good, but what really fills me with pride is to be able to acknowledge that due to my teachings – and their own efforts – various formers students went out to win awards and contests. It lets me realize that I must have done something very right! And aside those ten talents, there are many that still have the hitch to create comics and stryve to acchieve their own success in the field. What more could a teacher ask for!?…

Given I recently diverted my focus to the creative side of the medium, save for unforeseen occasions that may justify doing it, I currently am not planning a return to teaching. I feel I have done enough in that department. I myself have had my share of nominations and awards, and although that’s not something that drives me, hopefully my new projects may again capture the attention of readers and critics. That would, again, lead me to think that I must be doing something right ;)

XX Troféus Central Comics: Nomeações / Nominations

Os 20º Troféus Central Comics apresentaram os nomeados a melhores obras e autores de 2022, segundo preferências dos leitores. Já tendo sido nomeada e vencedora no passado, é sempre uma grande satisfação ver os meus trabalhos considerados pelo grande público, pelo que agradeço as indicações.

Na categoria Melhor Publicação Independente foi nomeada a antologia BD Montijo: Iniciação à Arte Sequencial – Antologia I (C.M.Montijo), que organizei e que reúne os trabalhos dos alunos dos meus três cursos, além de capa minha.

The 20th Central Comics Trophies presented nominees for the best books and authors of 2022, according to readers’ preferences. Having been nominated and won in the past, it is always a great satisfaction to see my works considered by the general public, to which I am grateful for these nominations.

In Best Independent Publication category, the anthology BD Montijo: Initiation to Sequential Art – Anthology I (CMM) was nominated, which I organized and that gathers comics of students from my three courses, in addition to my cover.

I also applaud the colleagues who were nominated: Daniel Maia, in Best Portuguese Publication, Drawing and Script, for CoBrA: Operation Goa (Ala dos Livros), in which I colored the cover; Mário André, in Best Independent Publication, for Quaresma, o Decifrador: O Caso do Quarto Fechado (Kustom Rats), in which I created the book design; Patrícia Costa, in Best Portuguese Drawing and Script, and Best Independent Publication, for Crónicas de Enerelis: Volume 03 – Sombras (Maegis); and finally, in Best Short Comic, Maria João Claré and Yves Darbos, in BD Montijo, and also, posthumously, José Ruy (w/ José de Matos-Cruz), for his last comic published while alive, in Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflexions, in which I also collaborated creatively and did the book design for.

Recentemente divulgado no respectivo canal de Youtube, embora a antologia BD Montijo tenha ficado em 2º lugar, muito perto da vitória, temos a comemorar o troféu para Melhor Obra Curta sagrar como vencedora a banda desenhada "Nos Cornos do Touro," da minha ex-aluna Mª João Claré. Parabéns!

Recently announced in the respective Youtube channel, although the anthology BD Montijo got 2nd place, very close to winning, we have to celebrate the Best Short Comic trophee that bestowed as winner the short comic "Nos Cornos do Touro," by my former student Mª João Claré. Congratulations!
