O Centro de Estudos Ibéricos (CEI), na Guarda, vai comemorar os 25 anos da fundação com conferências, exposições, literatura, teatro, artes visuais, fotografia e enologia, numa programação que se estende até 2028, dedicadas à memória de Eduardo Lourenço, designadas por ‘Eduardo Lourenço regressa a Casa’.

Apresentada na Biblioteca Municipal Eduardo Lourenço, na Guarda, a programação dos 25 anos do CEI é também uma homenagem à obra de Eduardo Lourenço, uma das figuras mais importantes do pensamento português contemporâneo. Hélder Sequeira, investigador da historiografia regional e chefe de serviço no município, é o comissário das comemorações.
Entre as actividades, está prevista uma exposição de pranchas da banda desenhada Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, por Diogo Figueira e Sabrina D. Marques (arg.), com Daniel Maia (arte) e Susana Resende (cor), que inaugura em Setembro. Será ainda antecipado o projecto de romance gráfico sobre o pensador, com o contributo do escritor Gonçalo M. Tavares.

The Center for Iberian Studies (CEI), in Guarda, Portugal, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with conferences, exhibitions, literature, theater, visual arts, photography, and enology, in a program that extends until 2028, dedicated to the memory of Eduardo Lourenço, titled ‘Eduardo Lourenço Returns Home’.

Presented at the Eduardo Lourenço Municipal Library in Guarda, the CEI's 25th-anniversary program is also a tribute to the work of Eduardo Lourenço, one of the most important figures in contemporary Portuguese thought. Hélder Sequeira, a researcher of regional historiography and head of service in the municipality, is the commissioner of the commemorations.
Among the activities, an exhibition of panels from the comic book Eduardo Lourenço: Fiction of Self – Intro, by Diogo Figueira and Sabrina D. Marques (script), with Daniel Maia (art) and Susana Resende (color), is planned, opening in September. The graphic novel project about the thinker, with contributions from the writer Gonçalo M. Tavares, will also be released in advance.

Dez anos de Coloração | Ten years of Coloring

A edição de Apparition Metempsychosis 1 chegou a casa, marcando o meu segundo trabalho além fronteiras. Por esse motivo, achei interessante recapitular os meus trabalhos como colorista, que já vão somando uma boa quantidade.

O publico conhece-me pelos meus trabalhos como ilustradora e autora de banda desenhada (premiada), assim como formadora e designer/grafista (também premiada), mas paralelamente a essas tarefas tenho trabalhado também como colorista; leia-se, colorindo de trabalhos doutro artista, nomeadamente o parceiro Daniel Maia.
Começo por citar uma primeira experiência gráfica, em que colori uma ilustração de Daniel Maia do herói Hellboy, de Mike Mignola. A peça foi criada para print de convenção, sendo comercializada no 2º Comic Con Portugal, em 2015.
O primeiro caso efectivo deu-se em 2020, com a pintura de 4 ilustrações temáticas, alusivas às estações do ano, para ilustrar o Prémio Bandas Desenhadas. Os desenhos e criação de personagens foram de Daniel Maia.
Depois, em 2021, fiz a coloração da capa de Outras Bandas #5, figurando uma Tágide em imagem dupla, para capa e contracapa. A esta, seguiu-se em 2022 a capa/contracapa de CoBrA: Operação Goa, desenhado pelo Daniel e editado pela Ala dos Livros. Este álbum foi um apreciável sucesso, obtendo oito nomeações para prémios de mérito, de todos os prémios de BD em Portugal, sendo depois eleito no programa Ler+ e atingido a internacionalização no Brasil. O álbum foi acompanhado por um print exclusivo, que igualmente colori.

Ainda em 2022, fiz pela primeira vez trabalho de tonning, ou meios-tons, numa BD curta de 7 páginas, publicada na antologia indie norte-americana, A Matter of Right, pela Variance Media, escrita por Travis e Liliana Johnson. Trabalhar em página de arte sequencial é muito diferente de colorir uma ilustração. Mas foi uma boa prática para o trabalho seguinte, em que colori o webcomic FCP: BD 2022/2023, que promoveu os jogos no Estádio do Dragão da temporada, mais o jogo da Final da Taça, e que somou ao todo 18 páginas. As BDs foram divulgadas online no site do clube e por todo o tipo de redes sociais e media.
Ainda em 2023, colori ainda três páginas de BD da parceria entre Eddy Gil e Daniel Maia, de título ‘From Death’, ainda sem edição mas exposto no 7º Contacto, em Lisboa. Colori também duas ilustrações para diferentes projectos de BD que não avançaram, nomeadamente da Saída de Emergência e Djinn Books.
Em 2024 dá-se a coloração de Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, pela Edicarte/Longshot, que foi escrito por Diogo Figueira e Sabrina D. Marques, e desenhado por Daniel Maia. Ao todo, são nove páginas de BD e duas ilustrações, de capa e contracapa. A BD foi finalista nos Troféus Central Comics, em Melhor Publicação Independente, Melhor Obra Curta e Melhor Webcomic (runner-up).

Em 2025, colori a uma amostra de 2 páginas para proposta de novela gráfica sobre Heroduto, com escrita de Stella D. e desenho de Daniel Maia. Colori também a BD curta ‘As Raízes do Invisível’, pelo escritor Hugo Pinto e desenhador Daniel Maia, que abriu a antologia inVISÍVEIS, da CerciOeirias, cuja publicação celebrou os 50 anos daquela instituição. O livro venceu também a categoria Melhor Antologia nos 23º Troféus Central Comics.
E entre 2025 e 2026, surge a 2^a internacionalização, ao ser chamada para apoiar na coloração de Apparition Metempsychosis 1, do escritor Tom Marvelli e desenhador Daniel Maia, com Daniel Henriques.

Ao longo dos 13 trabalhos, colori 60 artes, entre páginas de BD e ilustrações.

The edition of Apparition Metempsychosis #1 arrived at my home, marking my second work beyond borders. Therefore, I thought it would be interesting to recap my work as a colorist, which is already adding up to a good amount.

The public knows me for my work as an illustrator and comics artist (award-winning), as well as a trainer and designer/graphic artist (also award-winning), but in parallel to these tasks I have also been working as a colorist; that is, coloring the work of another artist, namely my partner Daniel Maia.
I begin by citing a first graphic experience, in which I colored an illustration by Daniel Maia of the hero Hellboy, by Mike Mignola. The piece was created for a convention print, being sold at the 2nd Comic Con Brazil, in 2015. The first effective case occurred in 2020, with the painting of 4 thematic illustrations, alluding to the seasons of the year, to illustrate the Prémio Bandas Desenhadas (Comic Books Award). The drawings and character creation were by Daniel Maia.

Then, in 2021, I colored the cover of Outras Bandas #5, featuring a Tagus nymph in a double image, for both the front and back covers. This was followed in 2022 by the cover/back cover of CoBrA: Operação Goa, drawn by Daniel and published by Ala dos Livros. This graphic novel was a considerable success, receiving eight nominations for awards from all the comic book awards in Portugal, and was later selected for the Ler+ program and achieved international recognition in Brazil. The book was accompanied by an exclusive print, which I also colored.

Also in 2022, I did my first toning work, or halftones, on a short 7-page comic published in the North American indie anthology, A Matter of Right, by Variance Media, written by Travis and Liliana Johnson. Working on a sequential art page is very different from coloring an illustration. But it was good practice for the following work, in which I colored the webcomic FCP: BD 2022/2023, which promoted the games at the Estádio do Dragão during the season, plus the Cup Final game, and which totaled 18 pages. The comics were released online on the club's website and through all kinds of social media and media outlets.

Also in 2023, I also colored three pages of a comic book from the partnership between Eddy Gil and Daniel Maia, titled 'From Death', still unpublished but exhibited at the 7th Contacto, in Lisbon. I also colored two illustrations for different comic book projects that did not go ahead, namely Saída de Emergência and Djinn Books.
In 2024, I colored Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, by Edicarte/Longshot, which was written by Diogo Figueira and Sabrina D. Marques, and drawn by Daniel Maia. In total, there are nine pages of comics and two illustrations, for the cover and back cover. The comic was a finalist in the Central Comics Awards, for Best Independent Publication, Best Short Work, and Best Webcomic (runner-up).

 

In 2025, I colored a 2-page sample for a graphic novel proposal about Heroduto, written by Stella D. and illustrated by Daniel Maia. I also colored the short comic ‘As Raízes do Invisível’ (The Roots of the Invisible), by writer Hugo Pinto and artist Daniel Maia, which opened the inVISÍVEIS anthology, published by CerciOeirias, celebrating the institution's 50th anniversary. The book also won the Best Anthology category at the 23rd Central Comics Awards.
And between 2025 and 2026, my second international experience came about, when I was called upon to assist in coloring Apparition Metempsychosis 1, by writer Tom Marvelli and artist Daniel Maia, with Daniel Henriques.

Throughout the 13 projects, I colored 60 pieces of art, including comic book pages and illustrations.

Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin [Another Door Comics]

A Another Door Comics lançou o segundo título criado por Tom Marvelli, a série de terror/acção Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, que é o primeiro título a expandir The World of The Boy in the Bot e explora o lado sombrio do universo ficcional, misturando ação vertiginosa com terror sobrenatural. A novela gráfica tem grafismo do artista Daniel Maia (X - Siege), do arte-finalista convidado Daniel Heniques (The Curse of Sherlee Johnson) e colorista Renato Spiller (Ben10), mais artes adicionais por Ronilson Freire e cores minhas.

A intriga acompanha os mundos contrastantes de Michael, um mercenário de resgate que opera em cenários do Terceiro Mundo, e de Thomas Winthrop Jr., um herdeiro milionário de um império corporativo.
Após uma missão em Porto Príncipe, no Haiti, Michael e o seu companheiro Fabian ficam presos num cerco, que resulta numa fatalidade. Algum tempo depois, na vida glamorosa de Nova Iorque, o mundo de Thomas Jr. também é revirado quando este é perseguido por suspeita de homicídio. No seu momento de maior desespero, após ser atacado por uma força sobrenatural misteriosa, Thomas é surpreendido pela ajuda de uma alma transmigrada, que possui as aptidões para enfrentar os desafios, mas para o qual necessita de partilhar o seu corpo…
Com a ordem natural destruída por um ato desesperado, duas almas são forçadas a viver num só corpo, partilhando um destino que nenhuma delas escolheu e sendo caçadas por uma entidade maléfica que as deseja a todo o custo. À medida que a verdade se revela, também se desfaz o controlo sobre as suas identidades – e sobre os pecados que recusam a permanecer enterrados. As segundas oportunidades têm um preço, e esta pode custar-lhes tudo.

Pela minha parte, fui convidada a participar na coloração da sequencia final do álbum, voltando a colorir páginas do artista Daniel Maia. Esta é a minha primeira experiência em coloração profissional no mercado de comics, após ter realizado tonning em 2021, em publicação indie.

Apparition Metempsychosis é uma trilogia de novelas gráficas, com o Book Two – A Place of Sin a chegar no 4º trimestre e a concluir no início de 2027.

Another Door Comics has released the second title created by Tom Marvelli, the horror/action series Apparition Metempsychosis: Book One – The Moment of Sin, which is the first title to expand The World of The Boy in the Bot and explores the dark side of the fictional universe, mixing breakneck action with supernatural horror. The graphic novel features artwork by Daniel Maia (X - Siege), guest inker Daniel Henriques (The Curse of Sherlee Johnson), and colorist Renato Spiller (Ben10), plus additional art by Ronilson Freire and colors by me.

The intrigue follows the contrasting worlds of Michael, a rescue mercenary operating in Third World settings, and Thomas Winthrop Jr., a millionaire heir to a corporate empire. After a mission in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Michael and his partner Fabian get caught in a siege, resulting in a fatality. Some time later, in the glamorous life of New York, Thomas Jr.'s world is also turned upside down when he is pursued on suspicion of murder. In his moment of greatest despair, after being attacked by a mysterious supernatural force, Thomas is surprised by the help of a transmigrated soul, who possesses the skills to face the challenges, but with whom he needs to share his body...
With the natural order shattered by a desperate act, two souls are forced to live in one body, sharing a destiny that neither of them chose and being hunted by an evil entity that desires them at all costs. As the truth is revealed, control over their identities also unravels – and over sins that refuse to remain buried. Second chances have a price, and this one may cost them everything.

I was invited to color the final sequence of the book, again collaborating with artist Daniel Maia. This is my first professional coloring experience in the comics market, after doing toning in 2021, in an indie publication.

Apparition Metempsychosis is a trilogy of graphic novels, with Book Two – A Place of Sin arriving in the 4th quarter and concluding the series in early 2027.

XXIII Troféus Central Comics – Vencedores / Winners

A revelação dos resultados do XXIII Troféus Central Comics foram ontem anunciados no 4º Maia BD, em data que celebra o 25º aniversário deste prémio, o único no país em que são os fãs e o grande público que determinam os finalistas e vencedores. Este ano, estava nomeada em 4 categorias, através de diversas colaborações.
É com prazer que vejo serem premiados os álbuns Tales from Nevermore (Melhor Produção), da Ala dos Livros, pelo editor Ricardo Magalhães, pelo qual fui a responsável pela produção do conceito visual e design da edição, mais a sua balonagem; Cadáver Esquisito! (Melhor Publicação Independente), da Arga Warga, com coord. de Daniel Maia; e inVISÍVEIS (Melhor Antologia), da CerciOeiras, com coord. de Hugo Pinto, em que colaboro com Daniel Maia.

Adicionalmente, fui finalista em Melhor Webcomic, com a BD ‘Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro’, que foi vice-campeã na categoria.

The results of the XXIII Central Comics Trophies were announced yesterday at the 4th Maia BD, on a date that celebrates the 25th anniversary of this award, the only one in the country where fans and the general public determine the finalists and winners. This year, she was nominated in 4 categories, through various collaborations.
It is with pleasure that I see being awarded the graphic novels Tales from Nevermore (Best Production), from Ala dos Livros, edited by Ricardo Magalhães, of which I was directly responsable for the book design, balloning and visual concept of the edition; Cadáver Esquisito! (Best Independent Publication), from Arga Warga, coord. by Daniel Maia; and inVISÍVEIS (Best Anthology), from CerciOeiras, coord. by Hugo Pinto, in which I collaborate with Daniel Maia.

Additionally, I was a finalist for Best Webcomic, with the comic ‘Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro’, and placed as runner-up in the category.

9º Coimbra BD - Fotos / Photos

O 9º festival Coimbra BD terminou há uma semana e faço aqui um breve relato fotográfico da minha passagem pelo evento, que foi a primeira como artista em cartaz.

A minha participação centrou-se na realização de oficinas de Cor em BD, mais concretamente uma oficina dirigida aos mais novos e uma palestra sobre o funcionamento da Cor na arte sequencial, que felizmente teve sala cheia. Além destas duas actividades, também ajudei à apresentação do livro Apparition Metempsychosis 1, de Tom Marvelli e Daniel Maia, em que colaborei como colorista assistente de Renato Spiller, apresentação esta conduzida pelo próprio Daniel Maia, que conto com grande adesão do público.

Adicionalmente, marquei presença na área de autógrafos, situada no novo espaço do festival, a reconvertida Igreja de S. Francisco. Quero agradecer aos leitores que me visitaram e cujas edições pude autografar – obrigada pelo apoio!

The 9th Coimbra BD festival ended a week ago, and here is a brief photographic account of my time at the event, which was my first as a featured artist.

My participation focused on conducting workshops on Color in Comics, more specifically a workshop aimed at younger audiences and a lecture on the role of color in sequential art, which fortunately had a full house. In addition to these two activities, I also helped with the presentation of Apparition Metempsychosis 1, by Tom Marvelli and Daniel Maia, in which I collaborated as an assistant colorist to Renato Spiller. This presentation was led by Daniel Maia himself and was also very well received.

Furthermore, I attended the autographs area, located in the festival's new space, the reconverted Church of São Francisco. I want to thank the readers who visited me and whose editions I was able to autograph – thank you for your support!
I also thank the Coimbra City Council and the GuessTheChoice organization for their invitation.

7º Barreiro IlustraBD

O salão Barreiro IlustraBD, no Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita, inaugurou este fim de semana e decorre até 31 de Julho. Os dias de inauguração concentram feira do livro, sessão de autógrafos, colóquios, oficinas e visitas guiadas às exposições. A entrada, como sempre, é grátis.

No Domingo, 12 de Abril, às 16h00, participo na apresentação de inVISÍVEIS, com Daniel Maia, Hugo Pinto e Osvaldo Medina, mais Paulo Pessoa, em representação da CerciOeiras. Apareçam!

The Barreiro IlustraBD comics sallon, at the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium, opened this weekend and will run until July 31. The opening days will feature a book fair, autograph sessions, talks, workshops and guided tours of the exhibitions. Admission, as always, is free.
On Sunday, April 12, at 4pm, I will be participating in the presentation of inVISÍVEIS, with Daniel Maia, Hugo Pinto and Osvaldo Medina, plus Paulo Pessoa, representing CerciOeiras. See you there!

Coimbra BD '2026

O 9º festival Coimbra BD vai decorrer nos dias 24 a 26 de Abril, novamente no Convento de São Francisco, em Coimbra, e este ano regresso ao evento como convidada oficial.
Além de marcar presença na área de artistas, vou realizar uma performance de Desenho de Gesto ao Vivo, com a colaboração dos visitantes - uma actividade inédita em festivais de BD - e vou realizar uma oficina de banda desenhada.

Susana Resende marca presença no Coimbra BD 2026 como artista gráfica, autora de banda desenhada e docente de desenho e arte sequencial.

Licenciada em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa e com formação em Desenho pela Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, desenvolveu um percurso consistente nas áreas da ilustração, BD e edição. Possui trabalhos desenvolvidos enquanto ilustradora, colorista, designer e balonista para várias editoras e entidades.

Conta com experiência em livros infantis, revistas e banda desenhada, com trabalhos publicados em editoras como Ala dos Livros, Apenas Livros, Devir Edições e Saída de Emergência. Foi distinguida nos Troféus Central Comics, onde venceu em 2018 após nomeação para Melhor Obra Curta na sua estreia no setor.

Ao longo do seu percurso, realizou exposições individuais em Portugal e no Reino Unido, e representou Portugal no festival de BD em Bruxelas e nesta edição estará em Coimbra para partilhar a sua experiência com uma apresentação muito especial sobre técnicas de criação de BD e coloração e ainda participar numa sessão de desenho ao vivo.

The 9th Coimbra BD comics festival will take place from April 24th to 26th, again at the Convento de São Francisco in Coimbra, and this year I return to the event as an official guest.

In addition to the artists' area, I will perform a Live Gesture Drawing session, with the collaboration of visitors - an unprecedented activity in comic book festivals - and I will conduct a sequential arts' workshop.

Susana Resende will be attending the Coimbra BD 2026 as a graphic artist, comic book author, and teacher of drawing and sequential art.

With a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon and training in Drawing from the National Society of Fine Arts, she has developed a consistent career in the areas of illustration, comics, and publishing. She has developed works as an illustrator, colorist, designer, and letterer for various publishers and entities.

She has experience in children's books, magazines and comics, with works released by publishers such as Ala dos Livros, Apenas Livros, Devir Edições and Saída de Emergência. She was distinguished at the Trophies Central Comics, where she won in 2018, after being nominated for Best Short Work with her debut comic.

Throughout her career, she held solo exhibitions in Portugal and in the United Kingdom, and represented Portugal at the Brussels Comics Festival. In this edition she will be in Coimbra to share her experience with a very special presentation on comic book creation and coloring techniques, and also participate in a live drawing session.

The Walking Dead vol.7 – Legendagem / Lettering

A colecção integral de The Walking Dead, publicada pela Devir Editora, entra na recta final com o Livro 7, que reúne os volumes originais 25 a 28. Criado por Robert Kirkman, com arte de Charlie Aadlard e Cliff Rathburn (tons), The Walking Dead Col.7 reúne os tomos No Turning Back (2016), Call to Arms (2016), The Whisperer War (2017) e A Certain Doom (2017).
O livro já está disponível através do website e será distribuído este mês de Abril.

Embora o desafio desta legendagem se prenda apenas pela capacidade de encaixar todo o texto palavroso nos balões, continua a ser um trabalho emocionante, e aguardo pelo livro final!

Neste TWD7, seguimos o imediato e violento rescaldo do massacre da fronteira de Alpha, o emotivo desespero dos sobreviventes e a escalada de guerra entre as comunidades aliadas de Rick e os Sussurradores. Dá-se uma mudança temática da sobrevivência para a criação de uma nova infraestutura de sociedade, que precisa de defender a sua paz e sossego, apesar dos protagonistas viverem momentos de dor e culpa.

The complete collection of The Walking Dead, published by Devir Editora, enters its final stretch with Book 7, which brings together the original volumes 25 to 28. Although the challenge of this lettering lies mostly in the ability to fit all the wordy text into the speech bubbles, it is still an exciting job, and I am looking forward to the final book!

In this TWD7, we follow the immediate and violent aftermath of Alpha’s border massacre, the emotional despair of the survivors, and the escalation of war between Rick's allied communities and the Whisperers. There is a thematic shift from survival to the creation of a new societal infrastructure that needs to defend its peace and quiet, despite the protagonists experiencing moments of pain and guilt.

Kiki de Montparnasse – Legendagem / Lettering

Este trabalho de legendagem conclui a colaboração com a Devir Editora na Colecção Angouléme, que igualmente tive o prazer de iniciar com A Trilogia Nikopol. A colecção apresentou obras clássicas e inéditas ao público português, e eu contribuí para a produção de metade delas.
Este volume, Kiki de Montparnasse, por Catel Muller e José-Loius Bocquet, vencedor do Prémio do Público no FIBDA ‘2008, será um livro a não perder para os amantes de banda desenhada explicita e de teor maduro, representanto ainda a estética alternativa da nova BD europeia do virar do século.

Kiki foi uma artista de cabaret e pintora, famosa por frequentar os círculos boémios de Montparnasse no início do séc. XX, onde conheceu artistas como Chaim Soutine, Jean Cocteau, Amedeo Modigliani, Man Ray e Alexander Calder, entre muitos outros. Uma das primeiras mulheres emancipadas em relação aos constrangimentos culturais e sexuais impostos pela sociedade da altura, tornou-se a musa de muitos artistas e companheira de Man Ray, que a imortalizou numa das suas obras mais icónicas, ‘Le Violon d’Ingres’. Foi símbolo da liberdade feminina numa época de intenso despertar artístico.

Neste livro, publicado originalmente em 2007, o escritor José-Louis Bocquet e o artista Catel Muller relatam, de forma inteligente e sensível, a história de uma artista carismática, que contribuiu de forma inegável para uma das épocas mais estimulantes e criativas do século. Dedicando-se a uma narrativa completista, acompanhando a personalidade desde a infância pobre até à sua consagração como Rainha de Montparnasse, a dimensão documental da obra numa abdica da emoção, articulando habilmente o rigor histórico com a fluidez dramatica.

This lettering work concludes my collaboration with Devir Editora on the Angouléme Collection, which I also had the pleasure of debuting with The Nikopol Trilogy. The collection presented both classic and unpublished works to the Portuguese public, and I contributed to the production of half of them.
This volume, Kiki of Montparnasse, by Catel Muller and José-Louis Bocquet, winner of the Audience Award at FIBDA 2008, will be a must-read for lovers of explicit and mature comics, also representing the alternative aesthetic of the new European comics of the turn of the century.

Kiki was a cabaret artist and painter, famous for frequenting the bohemian circles of Montparnasse in the early 20th century, where she met artists such as Chaim Soutine, Jean Cocteau, Amedeo Modigliani, Man Ray and Alexander Calder, among many others. One of the first women to be emancipated from the cultural and sexual constraints imposed by the society of the time, she became the muse of many artists and the companion of Man Ray, who immortalized her in one of his most iconic works, 'Le Violon d'Ingres'. She was a symbol of female freedom in a time of intense artistic awakening.
In this book, originally published in 2007, writer José-Louis Bocquet and artist Catel Muller intelligently and sensitively recount the story of a charismatic artist who undeniably contributed to one of the most stimulating and creative periods of the century. Dedicating themselves to a comprehensive narrative, following her personality from her impoverished childhood to her consecration as Queen of Montparnasse, the documentary dimension of the work does not forgo emotion, but instead skillfully articulates historical rigor with dramatic fluidity.
