Baralhas de Cães - Amostras | Dog Shuffles - Samples

Terminei na semana passada a produção do meu novo baralho de cartas ilustrado, desta vez dedicado a cães, que será intitulado Baralhas de Cães. Estou ansiosa por revelar este trabalho em breve, mas para já deixo-vos mais um lote de amostras preliminares e finalizadas. Como podem ver, as raças que escolhi retratar nos naipes foram o Cão de Água Português em Copas, o Pug em Ouros, o Dalmata em Espadas, o Pastor Alemão em Paus, e também usei o Doberman como Joker e o Husky Siberiano para capa da caixa.

O baralho estará disponível no final de Agosto, produzido pela Apenas Livros, que também lançou o anterior sucesso Gatos Baralhados. Se não conhecem ainda o anterior trabalho, espreitem aqui e aqui...

Last week I finished the production of my new illustrated card deck, this time dedicated to dogs, which will be titled Dog Shuffles. I'm looking forward to revealing this newest work soon, but for now I will leave you another batch of preliminary and finalized samples. As you can see, the races that I choosed to depict in the suits were the Portuguese Water Dog for Hearts, the Pugs for Diamonds, the Dalmatians for Swords, and the German Shepherds for Clubs, and I also used a Doberman for the Joker card and a Siberian Husky for the decks' cover image.

The deck will be available in late August, produced by Apenas Livros, which also launched the previous hit Gatos Baralhados / Shuffled Cats. If you don't know my previous work yet, take a look here and here...

Still Lives & Grotesque series | Séries Naturezas Mortas & Grotescos

A fechar as partilhas sobre a participação no projecto Aurora Boreal, refiro agora algo diferente: uma exposição falsa, dentro doutra exposição. Mais concretamente, a retrospectiva d'O Infante Portugal no 23º AmadoraBD (2012) foi composta por 3 mostras: colectiva com desenhos da trilogia; antevisão da adaptação do herói para BD, para sintetizar a personagem a novos leitores e fazer transição da trilogia para a nova série; e outra exposição, designada de Naturezas Mortas, pelo pintor Nero Faial.

Wrappin-up the showcases on my participation in the Aurora Boreal project, I'm now referring to something different: a mock-exhibit, within another exhibition. More specifically, The Infante Portugal retrospective in the 23rd AmadoraBD (2012) was composed of 3 shows: a collective exhibition with the trilogy's drawings; a preview of the hero's adaptation into comics, with the aim of synthesizing the character for new readers and transitioning from that trilogy to the new series; and another exhibit, Still Lives, by painter Nero Faial.

 

Ora, Nero Faial não é senão a identidade secreta do inimigo d'O Infante Portugal nos livros, conhecido por Vulcão, que na vida real é um pintor malogrado e curador da Fundação das Artes Narcissistas, bem como meio-irmão de Aurora Boreal. Achámos caricato expor uma mostra falsa, com quadros próprios da bizarria daquele, na qual foram usadas pinturas minhas que, nem a propósito, criei em 2003, o mesmo ano em que o primeiro livro foi escrito!...

Now, Nero Faial is nothing less than the secret identity of Infante Portugal's nemesis in the books, known as Volcano, who in real life is an ill-fated painter and curator of the Narcissistic Arts Foundation, and Aurora Boreal's half-brother. We found it funny to show a false exhibit there, with images proper of Nero's bizarreness, for which we used paintings of mine that, curiously, were created in 2003, the same year in which the first book was written!...

Nestes quadros, que iniciei com a minha primeira pintura a óleo, quis explorar a uma versão literal de “naturezas mortas”, inspirada em parte por uma fase inquieta da minha vida pessoal. Assim, transmiti nas obras o negrume que me afectava, e subsequentemente desenvolvi uma série tangencial, intitulada Grotescos, onde a expressão tosca e bizarra esteve em destaque, em parte inspirada nos esgares extremos do videoclip de “Black Old Sun” da banda Sound Garden (1994).

In these paintings, where I did my very first oil canvas, I wanted to explore a literal version of "still lifes," inspired in part by a restless phase of my life. Hence, I transmitted into these works the blackness that was surrounding me, and subsequently developed a tangential series, titled Grotesques, where the crude and bizarre expression was in center stage, partly inspired by the haunting facial expressions of Sound Garden's "Black Old Sun" videoclip (1994).

 

Inclusivamente, à imagem de exposições verdadeiras, foi exposta uma Folha de Sala sobre o “autor” e também críticas, uma negativa e outra exultante, pelos personagens fictícios Jacinto Magno e Lúcio Olímpio, que transcrevo abaixo:

A ARTE FATAL: A arte resgata-nos da matéria precária ou imperfeita que nós somos, em memórias e tradições. Por isso, as Virtudes Plásticas deveriam aspirar, para maior sublimação, ao alcance com a transcendência. A beleza, o êxtase, a fruição, a luz e a cor - eis elementos que estimulam um renovo do olhar... Mas, aqui, há apenas o sobressalto e deletério." --Jacinto Magno

GÉNIO FEROZ: Eis o génio puro e genuíno. Nas telas, as figurações languescem, como Naturezas Mortas. Estranhas entranhas, sinais possuídos pela tensão feroz e seminal da sátira e do desmaio, da insolência e da catarse. Estas imagens irónicas, poderosas, projectam-se sofisticadas, abrasivas, além do nosso olhar, tolhendo-nos o espírito pela poética do insuportável.” --Lúcio Olímpio

In addition, in the image of true exhibitions, a Room Sheet on the "author" was also available, as well as two criticis, one negative and another exultant, by the fictional characters Jacinto Magno and Lúcio Olímpio, which I transcribe below:

THE FATAL ART: Art rescues us from the precarious or imperfect matter that we are, in memories and traditions. Therefore, the Plastic Virtues should aspire, for greater sublimation, to reach with transcendence. FEROCIOUS GENIUS: Here is pure and genuine genius. On the canvases, figurations languish, like Still Lifes. Strange entrails, signs possessed by the ferocious and seminal tension of satire and fainting, insolence and catharsis. These ironic images, powerful, project themselves sophisticated, abrasive, beyond our gaze, holding us spirit by the poetics of the unbearable. "--Lucio Olímpio

Esta exposição, para a qual contribuí cenograficamente, foi comissariada por Ana Taipas e montada por Carlos Reis. Em suma, tratou-se duma curiosidade que ligou as minhas raízes na Pintura a este meu primeiro trabalho no ramo da Ilustração. Como que um caso da Arte a imitar a Vida, ou ao contrário.

This exhibition, to which I contributed scenographically, was commissaried by Ana Taipas and designed Carlos Reis. In short, it was a curiosity that linked my roots in Painting to this, my first work in Illustration. Like a case of Art imitating Life, or vice versa.

Aurora Boreal - Esboços / Sketches

Na sequência da partilha das ilustrações integrais que criei de 2011-2016 para a série Aurora Boreal, editada em quatro livretos entre 2017-2018, mostro agora os esboços e desenhos preliminares que inicialmente fiz para uma Aurora recém-nascida e infantil, e depois a arte conceptual do visual final, após esta ter ascendido ao estatuto de heroína.

Following the sharing of the full illustrations I created from 2011 to 2016 for the Aurora Boreal series, published in four booklets between 2017-2018, I now show the sketches and preliminary drawings that I initially made so as to represent a newborn and infant Aurora, and then the concept art of her final look, after she had risen to heroic status.

Outro conceito desenvolvido foi o das 3 idades, considerando que a personagem tem poderes cósmicos e pode tornar-se imaterial ou transpor dimensões, pelo que não é constante na sua idade cronológica.

Another concept developed was that of the three ages, considering that the character has cosmic powers and can become immaterial or transpose dimensions, so she isn't constant in her chronological age.

Foi após este ponto que comecei a conceber as ilustrações em si, que tinha bem definidas na minha mente desde o início. Foi só uma questão de ajustar composições e refinar detalhes.

It was after this point that I began to come up with the illustrations themselves, that I had well defined in my mind from the beginning. It was just a matter of adjusting the compositions and refining certain details.

Aproveito ainda para partilhar os trabalhos preliminares da prancha-dupla criada para a BD O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos, onde precisei de representar o protagonista, várias personagens secundárias com laços aos mundos místicos, e o artefacto mágico Livro Livre.

I also take the opportunity to share the preliminary works of the double-spread created for The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes, where I had to represent the protagonist, secondary characters with ties to the mystic worlds, and the magic artifact Boundless Book.

Por fim, feito o trabalho, as ocasiões para apresentar as edições nos eventos da especialidade vêem com a oportunidade para autógrafos desenhados para os fãs. Nem sempre me ocorre fotografá-los, mas ficam aqui alguns exemplos...

Finally, once the work is finished, the occasions for presenting the editions at events always see opportunities for signed autographs for the fans. It does not always occur to me to photograph them, but here are some examples...
