Aurora Boreal - Ilustrações / Illustrations

A série Aurora Boreal foi criada por José de Matos-Cruz e publicada pela Apenas Livros num formato diferente, o livro-de-cordel, popular nas primeiras décadas do séc.XX. Introduzida no vol.3 da trilogia O Infante Portugal (2012), onde fui convidada a ilustrar a nova personagem com o autor Daniel Maia, fui depois desafiada a criar o visual específico da heroína, estreada num spin-off insinuado na edição especial Aurora Boreal e O Instinto Supremo e consolidado no 1º ciclo O Princípio Infinito (2017-2018), composto por quatro livretos, ilustrados por mim, Daniel Maia, Renato Abreu e Teotónio Agostinho.
A acompanhar a apresentação da série no XIII FIBDB, a transição de protagonismo entre Infante Portugal e Aurora Boreal foi destacada numa exposição com desenhos na Galeria Escudeiros. Subsequentemente, os 4 livretos foram lançados no 28º AmadoraBD, XIII FIBDB, 29º AmadoraBD e na Tertúlia BD de Lisboa (#414). O 2º ciclo, O Eterno Paradoxo, começou entretanto a ser publicado, com ilustrações a cargo doutros quatro talentos, e o último ciclo virá no próximo ano, em O Círculo Imperfeito, no qual farei um pontual regresso.

The series Aurora Boreal was created by José de Matos-Cruz and published by Apenas Livros in a different format, the stringed-booklet, popular in the first decades of the 20th century. Introduced in vol.3 of O Infante Portugal trilogy (2012), where I was invited to illustrate the new character together with author Daniel Maia, I was then challenged to create the specific look of the female hero, for a spin-off premiered in the special edition Aurora Boreal and The Supreme Instinct and consolidated in the 1st story arc The Infinite Begining (2017-2018), composed of four booklets, illustrated by me, Daniel Maia, Renato Abreu and Teotónio Agostinho.
Following the series presentation at the XIII FIBDB, the transition of protagonism between Infante Portugal and Aurora Boreal was highlighted in an exhibition with drawings in Escudeiros Gallery. Subsequently, the four booklets were launched at the 28th Amadora BD, XIII FIBDB, 29th AmadoraBD and Tertúlia BD de Lisboa (#414). The 2nd arc, The Eternal Paradox (2019), has since begun to be published, with illustrations by four other talents, and the series will conclude next year with The Imperfect Circle, where I will make a brief return.

O desafio desta saga passou por inverter o processo criativo, pois foi pedido aos artistas criarem as imagens para capas de capítulos antes da narrativa ser escrita, para o autor se inspirar nos universos visuais dos ilustradores e, assim, incorporá-los na história. Por isso, estando ligada ao “nascimento” da personagem, decidi ilustrar aspectos da vida de Aurora..
The challenge of this saga was in the creative process reversal, because the artists were asked to create the images for chapter covers before the narrative was written, so that the author could draw inspiration from the illustrators visual universes and thus incorporate them into the story. Therefore, being linked to the characters' "birth", I decided to illustrate aspects of Aurora's life...

Em suma, destaquei os seus poderes cósmicos (1); ligações a Guimarães (2), Farol do Bugio (3) e Lisboa (4), onde representei um aspecto dela que idealizei anos antes, de que Aurora, sendo etéria, pode projectar-se em várias fases da sua vida, sintetizando este conceito em três idades: criança, adulta e idosa; figurei ainda o dilema do seu parentesco (5), concebida da ex-heroína soviética Oktobraia e entidade Malsão; e por fim, fiz uma composição com a afinidade da Aurora e a Bússola mágica (6), um dos artefactos chamados Signos Perpétuos.

In short, I emphasized her cosmic powers (1); the connections to Guimarães city (2), to Bugio's Lighthouse (3) and to Lisbon (4), where I represented an aspect that I had idealized years before, that Aurora, being ethereal, could project herself in several phases of her life, synthesizing this concept in three ages: child, adult and elderly; I also focused on the dilemma of her parenthood (5), conceived by the former Soviet heroine Oktobraia and cosmic entity Malsão; and finally, I made a composition that represents Aurora's affinity with the magic Compass (6), one of the three artifacts called Perpetual Signs.

As ilustrações foram desenhadas em formato A3, e coloridas digitalmente com tom azul claro.
The illustrations were drawn in graphite, in A3 (11,7x16,5 inches) format, and digitally colored with a light blue tone.

 

No processo criativo, desenhei outras imagens que considero estudos, que não se enquadram na série de ilustrações mas que são interessantes de partilhar também. Parte destes esboços originais foram editados como Extras em O Princípio Infinito, que partilharei noutra ocasião.
Amidst the creative process, I drew other images that I consider studies and do not fit into the series of illustrations, but which are interesting enough to share as well. Some of the original sketches have been published in the Extra sections of The Infinite Principle, which I will share on another occasion.

...E finalmente, tangencial a este projecto, como artista da Aurora fiz três páginas da revista O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos, premiada em 2018 com o prémio do público para Melhor Obra Curta, onde surge esta prancha-dupla que mostra a transição de poder do protagonista para a sua sucessora, e que igualmente faz “ponte” entre ambas séries, servindo ainda de ponto de acesso fácil aos leitores.

...And finally, tangential to this project, as Aurora's artist I did three pages of The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes comic-book, to which the readers awarded the prize for Best Short Comics in 2018, where this double-spread aimed to show the power transition from the protagonist to his successor, and that also "bridges" both series, serving as an easy access point for new readers.
