A Matter of Right: The Future of Justice [Variance Media]

No final de 2021, a chancela Variance Media, coordenada pelo editor/escritor Travis Johnson, publicou a antologia de banda desenhada A Matter of Right: The Future of Justice. Esta antologia de ficção especulativa, dedicada a abordar as questões sociais alusivas a conflitos étnicos e de classes actuais nos EUA, tenta abordar o momento crucial que o país está a passar; será mantido um sistema de lei injusto ou será aproveitado o momento para criar mudanças para melhor? Disse o Supremo Tribunal de Justiça, Wiley Rutledge, “A igualdade perante a lei numa verdadeira democracia é uma questão de direito. Não pode ser uma questão de caridade ou de favor, ou de graça, ou de discrição.”

Produzido em 2020, o projeto foi financiado via Kickstarter e reúne argumentistas e artistas internacionais que se uniram para criar BDs curtas em preto/branco, com histórias de teor intervencionista mas que também cruzam outros géneros, como a ficção científica, acção ou a narrativa quotidiana. Entre os autores encontram-se vários talentos de renome, e vários artistas portugueses, como Daniel Maia, Pedro Potier, Rafael Siopa, e eu própria.
Pela minha parte, contribuí com meios-tons digitais para “Tuesday,” uma BD de 7 páginas escrita por Travis Johnson e Liliana Johnson, com desenho de Daniel Maia.

In late 2021, Variance Media, coordinated by editor/writer Travis Johnson, published the comics anthology A Matter of Right: The Future of Justice. This anthology of speculative fiction, dedicated to addressing social issues alluding to current ethnic and class conflicts in the USA, attempts to address the crucial moment the country is going through; will an unfair system of law be maintained or will the momentum be seized to create a change for the better? As Supreme Court Justice Wiley Rutledge said, “Equality before the law in a true democracy is a matter of law. It cannot be a matter of charity or favor, or grace, or discretion.”

Produced in 2020, the project was funded via Kickstarter and brings together international writers and artists who came together to create short comics in black/white, with interventionist stories that also crossover other genres, such as science fiction, action or slice-of-life narrative. Among the authors are several renowned talents, and several Portuguese artists, such as Daniel Maia, Pedro Potier, Rafael Siopa, and myself.

For my part, I contributed digital greytones to “Tuesday,” a 7-page short comic written by Travis Johnson and Liliana Johnson, with drawings by Daniel Maia.
