Tales from Nevermore – Letragem & Book Design / Lettering & Design

A Ala dos Livros Edições acaba de lançar o álbum Tales from Nevermore, dos autores estreantes Pedro N. (argumento e desenho) e Manuel Monteiro (argumento), que tive o prazer de produzir. Embora este seja o primeiro álbum de ambos, Pedro Nascimento tem percurso no mercado português em antologias e ilustra RPGs na indústria dos EUA, e foi premiado no Artists & Writers of the Future Award, enquanto que Manuel Monteiro está associado desde jovem ao FIBDB e realizou o doc José Ruy: Uma Forma de Respirar.

Fui convidada pela Ala dos Livros a pós-produzir o livro, tarefa que passou por tratar da arte para impressão, balonar e legendar a BD, e paginar o álbum. Dada a sensibilidade do trabalho a preto/branco, exigiu cuidados extra em manipulação e limpeza de imagem, mas penso que o resultado final vai impressionar o público. Em especial porque a editora apostou numa capa de luxo com um recorte gráfico e acabamento com pele estampada, que simula livros antigos com encadernamento de cabedal e baixo-relevo.

Em Tales from Nevermore o corvo Vincent guia-nos por entre as campas do enigmático cemitério de Nevermore, ali desenterrando histórias de traições, amores malditos, ganância, vingança, loucura… São seis contos arrepiantes que compõem esta antologia de terror onde o inesperado espreita a cada página, numa homenagem moderna aos mestres clássicos do Terror, de Edgar Allan Poe a H. P. Lovecraft.
O álbum foi apresentado em 31/5 no 20º FIBDB, e vai estar em breve à venda da Feira do Livro de Lisboa e livrarias.

Publisher Ala dos Livros is about to release the graphic novel Tales from Nevermore, which debuts authors Pedro N. (story and drawing) and Manuel Monteiro (script), which I had the pleasure of producing. Although this is the first book by both, Pedro Nascimento has a career in the Portuguese market in several anthologies and illustrates RPGs in the US industry, and was distinguished in the Artists & Writers of the Future Award, while Manuel Monteiro has been associated with FIBDB since he was young and recently directed the documentary José Ruy: Uma Forma de Respirar.

I was invited by Ala dos Livros to post-produce the book, a task that involved remastering with the artwork for printing, lettering the pages and book-designing. Given the sensitivity of the black and white artwork, it requiring extra care with imagem manipulation and cleaning, but I think the end result will appeal to the public. Especially because the publisher opted for a luxury cover with graphic cutouts and a printed leather finish, which simulates old books with leather binding and low-reliefs.

In Tales from Nevermore, the raven Vincent guides us through the tombs of the enigmatic Nevermore cemetery, unearthing stories of betrayal, cursed love, greed, revenge, madness... Six chilling tales that make up this horror anthology where the unexpected lurks on every page, in a modern tribute to the classic masters of Horror, from Edgar Allan Poe to H. P. Lovecraft.
The graphic novel was be presented on 5/31 at the 20th FIBDB, and will soon be available at Lisbon Book Fair and bookstores.
