Blast Integral 2 – Legendagem e Paginação / Lettering and Book Design

Publisher Ala dos Livros has released the final part of the Blast diptych, by Manu Lacernet, which I was once again responsible for lettering and book designing. This is another luxury book, in a large format and with refined finishes, compiling the last two volumes of the original French series, considered the author's masterpiece, with black and white interiors and occasionally in color, and over 400 pages. Dense and dark, tragic and full of humanity, it is a work of sequential art that leaves no reader indifferent.
In Blast – Integral 2/2, Polza Mancini, still in police custody after the death of a young woman, recounts his memories in the desperate search for the Blast, "the explosion" – those magical moments that transport him to another place – as well as his stays in psychiatric hospitals, his terrors and nightmares…

The Walking Dead vol.7 – Legendagem / Lettering

Criado por Robert Kirkman, com arte de Charlie Aadlard e Cliff Rathburn (tons), The Walking Dead Col.7 reúne os tomos No Turning Back (2016), Call to Arms (2016), The Whisperer War (2017) e A Certain Doom (2017).

The complete collection of
The Walking Dead, published by Devir Editora, enters its final stretch with Book 7, which brings together the original volumes 25 to 28. Created by Robert Kirkman, with art by Charlie Aadlard and Cliff Rathburn (tones), The Walking Dead Col.7 brings together the volumes No Turning Back (2016), Call to Arms (2016), The Whisperer War (2017), and A Certain Doom (2017).
The book is already available on the publisher's website and will be distributed this April.

Although the challenge of this lettering lies mostly in the ability to fit all the wordy text into the speech bubbles, it is still an exciting job, and I am looking forward to the final book!

In this TWD7, we follow the immediate and violent aftermath of Alpha’s border massacre, the emotional despair of the survivors, and the escalation of war between Rick's allied communities and the Whisperers. There is a thematic shift from survival to the creation of a new societal infrastructure that needs to defend its peace and quiet, despite the protagonists experiencing moments of pain and guilt.

This lettering work concludes my collaboration with Devir Editora on the Angouléme Collection, which I also had the pleasure of debuting with The Nikopol Trilogy. The collection presented both classic and unpublished works to the Portuguese public, and I contributed to the production of half of them.
This volume, Kiki of Montparnasse, by Catel Muller and José-Louis Bocquet, winner of the Audience Award at FIBDA 2008, will be a must-read for lovers of explicit and mature comics, also representing the alternative aesthetic of the new European comics of the turn of the century.

Kiki was a cabaret artist and painter, famous for frequenting the bohemian circles of Montparnasse in the early 20th century, where she met artists such as Chaim Soutine, Jean Cocteau, Amedeo Modigliani, Man Ray and Alexander Calder, among many others. One of the first women to be emancipated from the cultural and sexual constraints imposed by the society of the time, she became the muse of many artists and the companion of Man Ray, who immortalized her in one of his most iconic works, 'Le Violon d'Ingres'. She was a symbol of female freedom in a time of intense artistic awakening.
In this book, originally published in 2007, writer José-Louis Bocquet and artist Catel Muller intelligently and sensitively recount the story of a charismatic artist who undeniably contributed to one of the most stimulating and creative periods of the century. Dedicating themselves to a comprehensive narrative, following her personality from her impoverished childhood to her consecration as Queen of Montparnasse, the documentary dimension of the work does not forgo emotion, but instead skillfully articulates historical rigor with dramatic fluidity.

O Deus Selvagem – Legendagem & Paginação / Lettering & Book Design

Another title from Ala dos Livros that I lettered and book designer last year is now available, The Savage God, by Fabien Vehlmann (script) and Roger (illustration). This book is a special edition from Ala dos Livros, as the publisher opted for the black-and-white version of the work, which better highlights the excellent artwork by the Spanish illustrator, that makes is making his editorial debut in Portugal. The graphic novel is completed by a section of colored extras.

Travel to the distant era of the Flood, where a young orphaned monkey seeks to prove his worth to his adoptive clan by hunting an old, wounded and cruel alligator. Eat or be eaten – the immutable cycle of nature. But by daring to venture into the heart of the forbidden lands, those of humans, he faces the cruelest of fates: to see his people massacred before his eyes, before being captured and trained in the arenas of the Empire to become a "Savage God", a sacred warrior molded for violence and the art of combat. It is primarily these long years of suffering that will fuel in him a burning obsession: revenge against his captors, at any cost.

Blast Integral 1 – Legendagem / Lettering

In the second half of last year, I had the opportunity to work on one of Ala dos Livros' biggest releases – the complete editions of Blast, by Manu Lacernet. I read Lacernet's work for the first time with the whimsical The Cosmonauts of the Future, but I confess that I prefer his career’s more recent works, which propelled him to international fame.
The original work consists of 4 books, which Ala dos Livros compiles into two volumes, considered the greatest work of the author's life. Each black and white book has +400 pages, with a retail price of €50.

Polza Manzini is an incredible mass weighing over 150 kilos. One day, he decides to turn his back on his previous life to set off in search of the "Blast," the explosion, that brief moment of perfection, an improbable flash that sometimes occurs to him when, forgetting his fat, he manages to fly. Polza has spent the last few months completely drunk, wandering like a homeless person. At one point, he is arrested as the prime suspect in a murder. How did this happen? His story is implausible, but it all began with that devastating mental breakdown that Polza calls "Blast".

Blacksad Stories: Weekly – Legendagem / Lettering

Ala dos Livros has just released one of its surprises for the last quarter, which I had the pleasure of lettering and that continues my collaboration with the publisher after the production of Tales from Nevermore. It's the long-awaited new book in the Blacksad series by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, but this time with a different approach, featuring a graphic novel based on the universe of private detective John Blacksad.
In Blacksad Stories – Weekly, the focus is on Dustin, a young ferret from New York, whose journey of survival and discovery will lead him to become the famous Weekly reporter, Blacksad's inseparable sidekick. A story of faith, censorship, and secrets!

Dustin lives in a small apartment in New York with his Russian grandmother named Chana. To her dismay, a devout believer, Dustin has no steady job and survives on odd jobs. Chana then decides to seek help from Pastor Lubansky, a sheep who leads a moral crusade against evil, which, in her view, is personified in comic books aimed at young readers. The pastor's husband hires Dustin to work in his "respectable" funeral home business, and although resigned, Dustin finds another job at Proper Comics, a publishing house run by Venables, the enemy of Lubansky's Virtue Squads. Despite the threat of censorship, Venables entrusts Dustin with the creation of a photo-novel, which leads him to realize that Mr. Lubansky's business hides many secrets...
With a captivating narrative, Blacksad Stories – Weekly delves into the social and political tensions that marked the 1950s, offering readers a story of mystery, humor, and cultural critique.

Released in 2000 by Dargaud, Blacksad is currently the latest mega-hit in European comics, with print runs rivaling those of more classic titles and becoming an international phenomenon, winning both award and critically acclaim. This graphic novel is illustrated by Giovanni Rigano, who studied at the Milan School of Comics and the Disney Academy, having worked on several animated series. He excelled in works such as Monster Allergy, Daffodil, Artemis Fowl, and Migrant, and returned to Dargaud with Tête de Pioche.

This was my first production in which my client co-printed with the original publisher, which presented me with new challenges in terms of taking extra steps in lettering, not only to meet the objectives of the Portuguese publisher but also the French one. But, as a Blacksad fan, it was also a pleasure to experience this work firsthand.

The 2nd busiest release season of the year begins. With the popular AmadoraBD comics festival approaching, which anticipates the Christmas season with the main editions of the second half of the year, all publishers are preparing their most attractive titles to present to readers. Publisher Devir is also entering the second half of its Angouléme Collection and in October will publish another volume that I had the pleasure of lettering – Anäis Nin: In the Sea of Lies, by Léonie Bischoff.

In the early 1930s, feminist writer Anaïs Nin lives in the suburbs of Paris. Often uprooted, dissatisfied with her married life, she grew up on two continents, spoke three languages, and struggled to find her place in a society that relegated women to secondary roles. In this graphic novel, author Léonie Bischoff freely explores the sensuality of one of the most fascinating figures of the 20th century, delving into her works, her diary, and her correspondence with writer Henry Miller.

Published in 2020, Anäis Nin: In the Sea of Lies won the ‘2021 Audience Award at the Angouléme International Comics Festival, one of the most important awards in the field in Europe, reflecting the importance and recognition given to the work by both the critical community and the general public.

For me, as letterer, it was a pleasure to work on this book, which style I deeply identify with, given its use of a color drawing technique I've also explored. Technically, it wasn't an easy book to letter, due to the use of lowercase font, but fortunately I was able to approximate the Portuguese adaptation to the original.

The Walking Dead vol.6 – Legendagem / Lettering

The Walking Dead vol.6 reúne os tomos originais All Out War II (2014), A New Beginning (2014), Whispers into Screams (2015) e Life and Death (2015).

The ominus collection of The Walking Dead, published by Devir Editions, continues with steady pace, now with the enigmatic Negan as co-protagonist. The series now enters the countdown to the conclusion of this modern epic – perhaps the most celebrated and award-winning bestselling independent American comic of the new millennium, created by Robert Kirkman, with art by Charlie Aadlard and Cliff Rathburn (grey-tones).
The Walking Dead vol.6 collects the original volumes All Out War II (2014), A New Beginning (2014), Whispers into Screams (2015) and Life and Death (2015). The book is now available on the publisher's website and will be distributed this month.

As always, I had the pleasure of lettering this edition, which continues to be technically challenging and personally exciting, as I follow the group's adventures while working!

In 2024, publisher Levoir, in partnership with RTP, launched the Classics of Portuguese Literature in Comics collection, which brought together Portuguese talents and foreign guest artists to adapt literary classics from Portuguese culture. Over the course of fifteen volumes, several titles were transposed into sequential art for the first time, and the project has already gathered critical recognition through several awards and nominations, with a first book also adapted for another European market.

The collection recently concluded with the 15th volume, Os Lusíadas II, published to mark the 500th anniversary of Luís de Camões. This is the second graphic novel adaptation of the important Portuguese-language classic Os Lusíadas, written in 1571 and published by King D. Sebastião in 1572, following the timeless graphic novel by José Ruy, and was now adapted by Pedro Moura, with artists Miguel Rocha, Daniel Silvestre, Xico Santos and Rami Tannous.
I briefly collaborated on this book by ballooning 3 pages, drawn by Daniel Silvestre, which feature the poet himself.

The epic poem Os Lusíadas tells the story of the navigator Vasco da Gama and the discovery of the sea route to India, and glorifies the deeds of the Portuguese people during the Discoveries, with an emphasis on the History of Portugal, mythology and the poet's reflections.
Camões was born in Lisbon around 1524. In 1527, during an epidemic of Plague in Lisbon, D. João III and the court moved to Coimbra, and little Luís, aged three, and his parents accompanied the king. Luís de Camões lived his childhood during the time of the great maritime discoveries and also at the beginning of Classicism in Portugal. He was a student at the school of the convent of Santa Maria and became a profound connoisseur of history, geography and literature. Manuel Severim de Faria, Camões' first biographer, says that the poet was arrested in Goa in 1556 by a governor of India and was soon exiled to China. At that time, the ship Camões was on was shipwrecked and legend has it that the writer saved his manuscript by swimming, returning to Portugal in 1569. The Lusiads is now required reading for 9th graders.

Finally, I would like to mention the existence of an erratum in the edition, which is now available in bookstores. It is with deep regret that I note the absence of my lettering on the pages that feature Camões in this collective graphic novel. It's
frustrating, to say the least, not to see mine and, especially, Daniel Silvestre's work complete in the edition, especially when the goal was to enhance the professionalism of the book, which not only concludes this seminal collection, but also marks the 500th anniversary of Camões' birth.
Unfortunately, the situation reflects a common reality in the Portuguese publishing world, where the effort and rigor of freelancers are not always valued and respected by those in charge. These are bitter lessons that remind us that sometimes our professionalism is put to the test by the mistakes of others. We can only hope that readers will be able to discern between the work of professionals and lapses that are not ours. Perhaps a future reprint can correct the error.

Tales from Nevermore – Letragem & Book Design / Lettering & Design

Publisher Ala dos Livros is about to release the graphic novel Tales from Nevermore, which debuts authors Pedro N. (story and drawing) and Manuel Monteiro (script), which I had the pleasure of producing. Although this is the first book by both, Pedro Nascimento has a career in the Portuguese market in several anthologies and illustrates RPGs in the US industry, and was distinguished in the Artists & Writers of the Future Award, while Manuel Monteiro has been associated with FIBDB since he was young and recently directed the documentary José Ruy: Uma Forma de Respirar.

I was invited by Ala dos Livros to post-produce the book, a task that involved remastering with the artwork for printing, lettering the pages and book-designing. Given the sensitivity of the black and white artwork, it requiring extra care with imagem manipulation and cleaning, but I think the end result will appeal to the public. Especially because the publisher opted for a luxury cover with graphic cutouts and a printed leather finish, which simulates old books with leather binding and low-reliefs.

In Tales from Nevermore, the raven Vincent guides us through the tombs of the enigmatic Nevermore cemetery, unearthing stories of betrayal, cursed love, greed, revenge, madness... Six chilling tales that make up this horror anthology where the unexpected lurks on every page, in a modern tribute to the classic masters of Horror, from Edgar Allan Poe to H. P. Lovecraft.
The graphic novel was be presented on 5/31 at the 20th FIBDB, and will soon be available at Lisbon Book Fair and bookstores.
