Esta
foi estranha… Em meados de Dezembro,
consegui finalmente trabalhar numa encomenda que tinha concordado
fazer no início
do ano – uma pintura num
ovo de avestruz. Descobri que pinturas personalizadas
em ovos de
avestruz são encomendas muito procuradas, algumas resultando em
trabalhos fantásticos que misturam pintura com escultura.
Felizmente, só
me pediram para
pintar a casa rural do cliente.
O
primeiro desafio foi entender como desenhar e pintar sob uma
superfície curva e texturizada. Muito disto
exigiu trabalho
de preparação, lixar e alisar a camada vítrea do ovo e também
desenhar e pintar a imagem
em papel antes de
a duplicar
no ovo. Porque só tinha
uma chance e o ovo (caro) seria estragado
se cometesse um erro!...
Este
trabalho exigiu-me
lembrar de uma
série de etapas e de técnicas
artísticas que não usava
desde a faculdade, mas graças à minha experiência académica
consegui enfrentar o desafio através de
procedimentos criativos. A parte da pintura foi aquela que fiz
como “peixe na água”, um pequeno alívio considerando que foi a
primeira vez que trabalhei num
ovo como tela. E ocorre que há mais um cliente à espera por
outra pintura de ovo.
This
was a weird one… Around mid December, I finally got around to work
on a commission I had agreed on earlier in the year – a painting on
an ostrich egg. I came to find out that customized ostrich eggs
paintings are very sought after commissions, some resulting in
fantastic works that mix painting with sculpting. Fortunately, I was
just asked to paint the client’s rural home.
The
first challenge was to understand how to draw and paint on a curved
and textured surface. A lot of it required prep work, to sand off and
smooth over the glassy coating on the egg and also to draw and paint
the piece on paper prior to duplicating it on the egg. Because I only
got one shot and the (expensive) egg would be spoiled if I made a
mistake!…
This
work required me to recall a series of artistic steps and techniques
that I hadn’t put to use since college, but thanks to my academic
experience I managed to face the challenge with creative procedures.
The painting part was the one that I took like “fish to water,” a
small relief considering it was my first time working on an egg as a
canvas. As it turns out, there’s one more client waiting for
another eggy painting from me.
