RETROEXPETIVAS: Estágio Profissional / Professional Internship - CERCICA

Ao atualizar o meu currículo, deparei-me com experiências que nunca havia partilhado, como o meu estágio profissional na Cooperativa para a Educação e Reabilitação de Cidadãos Inadaptados de Cascais (Cercica), durante os anos de 2008 e 2009.

Nesse período, fui responsável pela gestão e organização do atelier de arte e criatividade como técnica superior de expressão plástica, sob a supervisão da responsável de sala à época, Daniela Gomes. Foi uma experiência enriquecedora que me permitiu entrar em contacto com uma parcela da população mais vulnerável e, por vezes, mal compreendida.

While updating my CV, I came across experiences I had never shared, such as my professional internship at the Cooperative for the Education and Rehabilitation of Citizens with Disabilities (Cercica) in Cascais, Portugal, from 2008 to 2009.

During this time, I was responsible for the management and organisation of the art and creativity studio as senior fine arts technician, under the supervision of the then-head of the room, Daniela Gomes. It was an enriching experience that allowed me to connect with a portion of the population that is more vulnerable and often misunderstood.

Descobri muita criatividade e constatei, pela primeira vez, o quanto o exercício das actividades em expressões artísticas pode ser terapêutico para todas as partes envolvidas. Fui responsável pela organização e montagem de uma exposição coletiva de trabalhos dos utentes no espaço Fórum - Cooperativa de Santarém, em setembro de 2008, e pela logística da exposição "Tightrope", em Cascais, em dezembro do mesmo ano.

Tive a oportunidade de desenvolver exercícios específicos, realizando um acompanhamento personalizado para cada utente, visando desenvolver a perceção visual, como no projeto de gravura "Linoleografia - gravação em linóleo".

Organizei e supervisionei grupos de trabalho em projetos de cariz comercial e fui corresponsável pela qualidade e logística de projetos como os "postais de Natal 2008" e os "postais de aniversário" para a arquiteta Isabel Gonçalves.

I discovered a lot of creativity and realised, for the first time, how therapeutic the practice of artistic expression can be for everyone involved. I was responsible for organising and setting up a collective exhibition of service users' work at the Fórum - Cooperativa de Santarém space in September 2008, and for the logistics of the "Tightrope" exhibition in Cascais in December of the same year.

I had the opportunity to develop specific exercises, providing personalised support for each service user, with the aim of developing visual perception, such as the "Linoleography - lino printing" project.

I organised and supervised work groups on commercial projects and was co-responsible for the quality and logistics of projects such as the "2008 Christmas cards" and "birthday cards" for architect Isabel Gonçalves.

 

Desenvolvi o conceito e supervisionei o trabalho de grupos de utentes selecionados para a decoração da cantina da instituição, o que foi muito divertido tanto para eles quanto para mim!

 
I developed the concept and supervised the work of groups of service users selected to decorate the institution's canteen, which was great fun for both them and me!

Por fim, desenvolvi o conceito da peça escultórica apresentada no concurso "Arte Mar Estoril 2009" e fui responsável pelo registo fotográfico do portfólio de azulejaria dos utentes do atelier de arte e criatividade. 

 
Finally, I developed the concept for the sculptural piece submitted to the "Arte Mar Estoril 2009" competition and was responsible for the photographic record of the tile portfolio of the art and creativity studio's service users.

The Walking Dead vol. 5 – Legendagem / Lettering

A Editora Devir acaba de anunciar o novo volume da série The Walking Dead, que se encontra a publicar no formato integral (seguindo os Omnibus americanos). The Walking Dead – Colectânia 5, por Robert Kirkman (arg.) e Charlie Aadlard (des.), mais Cliff Rathburn (tons), reúne os volumes 17 a 20 da saga original, nomeadamente Something to Fear (2012), What comes After (2013), March to War (2013) e All Out War I (2014).
Este novo livro encontra-se em pré-venda no site da editora e será distribuído dentro de três semanas, em Fevereiro.

A editora recupera assim a pausa na edição de 2016 e avança para um volume que contém apenas material inédito, que tive oportunidade de legendar, fazendo agora todos os quatro livros sozinha. A série em formato integral ultrapassa assim, também, o meio da saga, dado que vai concluir em 8 tomos.

Publisher Devir has just announced the new volume of The Walking Dead series’ portuguese edition, which it is releasing in full format (following the american Omnibus). The Walking Dead – Collection 5, by Robert Kirkman (script) and Charlie Aadlard (art), plus Cliff Rathburn (tones), brings together volumes 17 to 20 of the original saga, namely Something to Fear (2012), What comes After (2013), March to War (2013) and All Out War I (2014).
This new book is available for pre-sale on the publisher's website and will be distributed within three weeks, in February.

Devir thus recovers their 2016 publication pause and moves forward with a volume that contains only unpublished material in Portugal, which I had the opportunity to letter, now doing all four books alone. The series in full format also goes beyond the saga’s halfway point, given it will conclude in 8 books.

2024 em Revisão | 2024 in Review

Começo o novo ano com o habitual rescaldo da actividade anterior. Em 2024, celebrei 6 anos de formações em BD e fiz uma revisão dessas e dos sucessos dos artistas que formei. Infelizmente, algumas novas formações que planeava voltar a realizar acabaram por não se concretizar, tendo voltado a minha ocupação para o lado criativo e produção de BDs.

Em termos criativos, depois de falso começo no final de 2023, comecei a desenvolver um novo livro infantil com dois escritores, que dada a sua extensão e complexidade só será publicado este ano. Contudo, participei noutros projectos ao longo do ano, primeiro na antologia Abril, Cravos Mil – Histórias de Liberdade, criado em parceria com o novo grupo TágIIde e publicado pela C. M. de Montijo, em que ilustrei a capa e contracapa do livro, assim como o design e paginação deste. A edição foi premiada com o 6º Prémio Bandas Desenhadas para Melhor Antologia, sendo ainda nomeada para Melhor BD Curta, por trabalho de Daniel Maia.
Para ajudar a promover esta edição, bem como o novo álbum de Mário André, Quaresma, o Decifrador – A Morte de Dom João, cuja balonagem, design e paginação assegurei, marquei presença no 19º FIBDB, com autógrafos.

Ainda em maré de prémios, o XXI Troféu Central Comics indicou como finalistas um par de criações em que participei, como o fanzine Outras Bandas #9, nomeado para Melhor Publicação Independente, e a rubrica FCP-BD: 2022/2023, com Daniel Maia, para Melhor Webcomic. Curiosamente, este último foi o runner-up, com a diferença de 1 voto.

E continuei a colaborar com Daniel Maia no último trimestre, com a revista Eduardo Lourenço: Ficção de Si – Intro, publicado por Edicarte/Longshot, que antecipa o projecto de maior fôlego em preparação. O trabalho foi escrito por Diogo Figueira e Sabrina D. Marques, e desenhada por Daniel Maia, tendo eu colorido e paginado o comic.
O título foi apresentado no 35º Amadora BD, tornando-se um sucesso imediato, ao esgotar logo a tiragem de 350 unidades. Nesta ocasião, tive oportunidade de participar na apresentação no festival e em sessão de autógrafos.

No festival Amadora BD pude também segurar pela primeira vez a minha estreia em legendagem profissional, na série integral de The Walking Dead - Livro 4, pela Devir. Depois de balonar dois álbuns de Mário André e produzir treze títulos, entre álbuns, antologias e fanzines, mais sete baralhos de cartas ilustrados, este foi a primeira edição profissional que assinei, tendo legendado os dois tomos inéditos que a compilação inclui.
Posteriormente, legendei e produzi na integra o vol.5 e 6 da série, a lançar em 2025, assim como duas outras edições integrais que a Devir vai publicar em breve, nomeadamente os três álbuns da Trilogia Nikopol, por Enki Bilal (A Feira dos Imortais, A Mulher Armadilha e Frio Equador), mais Alack Sinner vol.1 – A Idade da Inocência, de Jose Munõz e Carlos Sampayo (Alack Sinner, Polícia ou Cabo Raso e Reencontros). Assim, de uma assentada, são dezasseis novos álbuns profissionais – entre clássicos europeus e fenómenos americanos – que junto ao meu currículo de legendadora.

Foi um ano produtivo em que apenas faltou dar mais margem a trabalhos autorais, algo que vou compensar em 2025.

I start the new year with the usual aftermath of the previous activity. In 2024, I celebrated 6 years of teaching sequential art and reviewed those and the successes of the artists that I trained. Unfortunately, new courses that I planned to teach again ended up not happening and I returned to my creative tasks and to producing comics.
In creative respects, after a false start at the end of 2023, I began developing a new children's book with two writers, which given its length and complexity will only be released this year. However, I participated in other works throughout the year, first in the anthology April, Carnation Showers – Stories of Freedom, created in partnership with the new group TágIIde and published by Montijo Council, in which I illustrated the books’ cover and backcover, as well as did its design. The edition was awarded with the 6th Bandas Desenhadas Award for Best Anthology, and was also nominated for Best Short Comic, for a work by Daniel Maia.
To help promote this edition, as well as Mário André's new book, Quaresma, the Decipherer – The Death of Don John, whose ballooning and design I produced, I attended the 19th FIBDB, where I also did book signings.

Still in the awards season, the XXI Central Comics Throphies nominated a couple of works I participated in, such as the fanzine Outras Bandas #9, finalist as Best Independent Publication, and the FCP-BD: 2022/2023 series, with Daniel Maia, as Best Webcomic. Interestingly, the latter was the runner-up, with a difference of only 1 vote.

And I continued collaborating with Daniel Maia in the last quarter, with comic-book Eduardo Lourenço: Fiction of Self – Intro, published by Edicarte/Longshot, which anticipates the larger project in preparation. The work was written by Diogo Figueira and Sabrina D. Marques, and drawn by Daniel Maia, with me coloring and designing the comic.
The title was presented at the 35th Amadora BD festival, becoming an immediate success, with the 350 print run quickly selling out. On this occasion, I had the opportunity to participate in the festival presentation and book signing.

At the Amadora BD festival I was also able to hold my debut in professional lettering for the first time, the portuguese edition of The Walking Dead Omnibus vol.4, by Devir. After lettering two of Mário André's books and producing thirteen titles, including graphic novels, anthologies and fanzines, plus seven illustrated decks of cards, this was the first professional edition I worked on, having lettered the two unpublished volumes in the compilation.
Later, I lettered and produced in full both vol.5 and 6 of the series, to be released in 2025, as well as two other omnibus editions that Devir will soon publish, namely the three graphic novels of The Nikopol Trilogy, by Enki Bilal (Gods in Chaos, The Trap Woman and Cold Ecuador), plus Alack Sinner vol.1 – The Age of Innocence, by Jose Munõz and Carlos Sampayo (Alack Sinner, Police or Soldier and Encounters). So, in one go, there are sixteen new professional graphic novels – including European classics and and American phenomena – add to my lettering resume.

It was a productive year in which the only thing missing was to leave more room for my original works, something that I will make up for in 2025.
