17º FIBDB - Antropomorfizações das Estações do Ano / Anthropomorphization of Seasons of the Year

O 17º Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja já inaugurou na Casa da Cultura e decorre ali, até 12 de Junho. Em destaque no evento estará uma pequena mostra intitulada “Prémios Bandas Desenhadas: Antropomorfização das Estações do Ano”, com as personagens originais criadas por Daniel Maia (desenhos) e por mim (cores digitais), em 2019.

As ilustrações foram feitas para os Prémios Bandas Desenhadas, para ilustrar as nomeações trimestrais que acompanham as estações do ano, com figuras específicas para o Inverno, Primavera, Verão e Outono. As imagens são apresentadas na Bedeteca de Beja, onde decorre o anúncio dos vencedores dos 3ºs Prémios, alusivo a edições do ano passado.
A exposição foi recentemente mencionada num vídeo de destaque no canal do youtube Doc Doc TV…

The 17th Beja International Comics Festival has already started at the Casa da Cultura and runs there until June 12th. Featured at the event will be a small exhibition entitled “Bandas Desenhadas Awards: Anthropomorphization of Seasons of the Year”, with the original characters created by Daniel Maia (drawings) and me (digital colors), in 2019.

The illustrations were made for the BD Awards, to illustrate the quarterly nominations that accompany the seasons, with specific figures for Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. The images are presented at Beja Comics Library, where the announcement of the winners of the 3rd Awards takes place, alluding to last year's editions.
The exhibition was recently mentioned in a featured video on the youtube channel Doc Doc TV…

Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados | Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflections [Kafre/Arga Warga]

Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados é uma antologia de banda desenhada, em coedição de Kafre / Arga Warga. A personagem literária foi criada em 2012 por José de Matos-Cruz, com transfiguração original de Susana Resende. Participam nesta colectânea de obras curtas, inéditas ou previamente publicadas, Daniel Maia, Fernando Vilhena de Mendonça, João Raz, José Bandeira, Nuno Dias, Renato Abreu e Susana Resende, também autora da capa e do grafismo, além de mestre José Ruy, numa colaboração especial.
A apresentação de Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados decorre no Domingo, 29 de Maio, às 16h30, no 17º FIBDB.

 

Aurora Boreal surgiu no universo romanesco/ilustrado d’O Infante Portugal (As Tramóias Capitais; 2007, A Íntima Capitulação; 2010, As Sombras Mutantes; 2012, pela editora Apenas Livros), concebido por José de Matos-Cruz, tendo nascido de uma relação efémera e sensual entre Oktobraia, uma heroína soviética exilada em Lisboa, e o Malsão, um portento cósmico que avassala o marasmo lusitano.
Menina e loira, emancipada em tríptico imaginado/literário (O Princípio Infinito; 2017-2018, O Eterno Paradoxo; 2019, O Círculo Imperfeito; 2020, por Apenas Livros), logo uma auspiciosa Aurora Boreal - irradiando além das luzes e das trevas - rompe os ciclos da infância e da identidade, pelo capricho súbito e intenso de uma libertação… Nessa aprendizagem mágica e germinal, Aurora Boreal suspende as coordenadas sobre o tempo e o lugar em que decorrem tais derivas e interferências. Do passado ao futuro, ou em actualidade virtual, a sua aparência torna-se então Presente - ainda adolescente, adulta ou idosa -, desafiando todas as rotinas, como um fenómeno telúrico e transfigurador!

Entretanto, Aurora Boreal compareceu no clímax pelos quadradinhos d’O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos (2017), com desenho de Daniel Maia, também coautor da história com José de Matos-Cruz, que elaborou o texto. Esta banda foi distinguida pelos XVI Troféus Central Comics, na categoria Melhor Obra Curta (2018).

Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados culmina, assim, uma incursão fantástica pelos meandros da realidade e em dimensões alternativas. Afinal, com mais simbólica ênfase de reinvenção - ao conferir, pela banda desenhada, uma abordagem múltipla e propícia às expectativas de cada criador artístico.

 

Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflections is a comic book anthology co-published by Kafre / Arga Warga. The literary character was created in 2012 by José de Matos-Cruz, with an original transfiguration by Susana Resende. Participating in this collection of short comics, some unpublished and others previously released, are authors Daniel Maia, Fernando Vilhena de Mendonça, João Raz, José Bandeira, Nuno Dias, Renato Abreu and Susana Resende, also author of the cover and graphics, in addition to master José Ruy, in a special collaboration.
The Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflections book release takes place on Sunday, May 29, at 4:30pm, at the 17th FIBDB.

Born in the novelistic/illustrated universe of Infante Portugal (The Capital Ploys; 2007, The Intimite Capitulation; 2010, The Mutant Shadows; 2012, by Apenas Livros),conceived by José de Matos-Cruz, Aurora Boreal is born from an ephemeral relationship between Oktobraia, a Soviet heroine exiled in Lisbon, and Malsão, a cosmic portent that overwhelms the Portuguese doldrums.
Girly and blonde, emancipated in an imagined/literary trilogy (The Infinite Begining; 2017-2018, The Eternal Paradox; 2019, The Imperfect Circle; 2020, by Apenas Livros) and also appearing in The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes (2017) – awarded as Best Short Work in XVI Central Comics Trophies (2018) –, then an auspicious Aurora Boreal - radiating beyond the light and darkness - breaks the cycles of childhood and identity, by the sudden and intense whim of a liberation... In that magical and germinal learning, Aurora Boreal suspends the coordinates of time and place where such drifts and interferences take place. From the past to the future, or in virtual actuality, her appearance then becomes the Present – still a teenager, an adult or an elderly woman – , defying all routines, like a telluric and transfiguring phenomenon!

Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflections thus culminates a fantastic incursion into the intricacies of reality and into alternative dimensions. After all, with a more symbolic emphasis on reinvention – by providing, through the comics, a multiple approach that is conducive to the expectations of each artistic creator.

Outras Bandas #7 – Heróis Portugueses 2 [Tágide]

Após a iniciativa Heróis Portugueses (2020-2021), em que o colectivo Tágide ilustra tributos aos 100 principais heróis da BD portuguesa, compilada no Outras Bandas #5 (Setembro 2021), o grupo repetiu o desafio no 1º semestre, com uma 2ª ronda, desta vez celebrando outras 50 mais famosas personagens da banda desenhada nacional, reunidas no Outras Bandas #7 - Heróis Portugueses II.

Com personagens bem conhecidas do público, entre figuras clássicas e criações contemporâneas, houve ainda espaço para recordar heróis desaparecidos, procurando cultivar uma memória viva da Arte Sequencial portuguesa e prestar uma justa homenagem aos autores que desde o século passado ajudaram a trazer o sector até aos mais auspiciosos dias de hoje.
Os critérios de selecção passaram por privilegiar o destaque a heróis de apresentação icónica e não tanto protagonistas de novelas gráficas; razão pela qual ficaram de fora menções a certas obras fundamentais da BD nacional. Procurou-se ainda seleccionar heróis que tenham constituído uma colecção ou sido publicado em vários títulos, legitimando a sua popularidade.

O projecto contou com contributos pela quase totalidade dos membros do colectivo informal: António Coelho, Daniel Maia, Filipa Lopes, Henrique Gandum, João Raz, Jorge RoD! Rodrigues, José Bandeira, Maria João Claré, Mário André, Nuno Dias, Patrícia Costa, Rafael Marquês, Rui Serra e Moura, Sérgio Santos, Shania Santos, Yves Darbos e eu.

Outras Bandas #7 – Heróis Portugueses II é uma edição independente, respeitadora do Direito de Autor dos criadores aqui representados, que são inteiramente creditados. O título é lançado no 17º FIBDB, no Domingo, dia 29/5, estando disponível no Mercado do Livro.

After the initiative Portuguese Heroes Heróis Portugueses (2020-2021), in which the Tágide collective illustrated tributes to the 100 main heroes of Portuguese comics, compiled in Outras Bandas #5 (September 2021), the group repeated the challenge with a 2nd round in the 1st semester, this time celebrating another 50 of the most famous characters from national comics, which are brought together in this Outras Bandas #7 - Portuguese Heroes II.

With characters well known to the public, between classical figures and contemporary creations, there was also room to remember forgoten heroes, seeking to cultivate a living memory of Portuguese Sequential Art and pay a fair tribute to the authors who have helped to bring the sector to the most auspicious nowadays.
The selection criteria were based on privileging heroes with an iconic presentation and not so much protagonists of graphic novels; reason why certain fundamental works of portuguese comics were left out. An attempt was also made to select heroes that have constituted a collection or that have been published in several titles, thus legitimizing their popularity.

The project had contributions from almost all the members of the informal collective: António Coelho, Daniel Maia, Filipa Lopes, Henrique Gandum, João Raz, Jorge RoD! Rodrigues, José Bandeira, Maria João Claré, Mário André, Nuno Dias, Patrícia Costa, Rafael Marquês, Rui Serra e Moura, Sérgio Santos, Shania Santos, Yves Darbos and myself.

Outras Bandas #7 – Portuguese Heroes II is an independent edition, respecting the copyright of the creators represented here, who are fully credited. The title is launched at the 17th FIBDB, on Sunday, 5/29, and is available at the Book Market.

Tágide: Heróis Portugueses II / Portuguese Heroes II

O colectivo informal de banda desenhada, Tágide, que derivou dos meus cursos BD Montijo: Iniciação à Arte Sequencial e que co-fundei em 2019, esteve ocupado neste 1º semestre a desenvolver a iniciativa Tágide: Heróis Portugueses II. Esta 2^a ronda do projecto de tributo às principais personagens da BD portuguesa, voltou a envolver os talentos do grupo, que ilustraram os heróis como forma de homenagem aos seus respectivos autores e visando celebrar as criações.

Desta vez, homenageámos apenas 50 figuras, e o meu contributo foi esta interpretação do Careto, figura popular do folclore português e entidade central da tradicional “Festa das Raparigas,” que foi adaptado à BD por Ricardo Cabral (2005) e António Pinelo Tiza (arg.) e José da Fonte (des.) (2015), mais João Paulo Rocha (des.) (2020).

A iniciativa foi recentemente compilada no fanzine Outras Bandas #7: Heróis Portugueses II, que será lançado no 17º FIBDB.

 

The informal comics collective, Tágide, which derived from my BD Montijo: Initiation to Sequential Art courses and which I co-founded in 2019, got busy in this 1st semester developing the Tágide: Heróis Portugueses II initiative. This 2nd round of the tribute project to the main characters of Portuguese comics, once again involved the talents of the group, who illustrated the heroes as a way of paying tribute to their respective authors and aiming to celebrate the creations.

This time, we paid tribute to just 50 characters, and my contribution was this interpretation of Careto, a popular figure in Portuguese folklore and central entity of the traditional “Festivity of the Girls,” which was adapted into comics by Ricardo Cabral (2005) and António Pinelo Tiza ( arg.) and José da Fonte (des.) (2015), plus João Paulo Rocha (des.) (2020).

The initiative was recently compiled in fanzine Outros Bandas #7: Heróis Portugueses II, to be launched at the 17th FIBDB.

17º FIBDB – Apresentações e Exposição / Presentations and Exhibit

A Bedeteca de Beja anunciou o programa do 17º Festival Internacional de Banda Desenhada de Beja, que terá lugar entre 27 de Maio e 12 de Junho, naquela capital alentejana. Reconhecido como um dos melhores eventos da especialidade no país, o certame traz a Portugal talentos internacionais desde 2005, tendo assim criado em Beja uma das principais mecas da BD europeia.

Entre as 15 exposições patentes, haverá ainda uma pequena mostra com ilustrações minhas (cor) e de Daniel Maia (desenho), “Prémio Bandas Desenhadas – A Antropomorfização das Estações do Ano,” na própria Bedeteca. Será também nesse local onde se realiza, ao 12h30, a revelação dos vencedores do 3º Prémio Bandas Desenhas, onde eu própria estou nomeada, com a BD curta “Menino Perdido.”

Relativamente a apresentações e lançamentos, estarei presente para as seguintes sessões, no Domingo, dia 29/5:

14h30 – Apresentação do álbum CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros);

15h15 – Apresentação da livro BD Montijo: Iniciação à ArteSequencial – Antologia I (Câmara Municipal de Montijo);

16h30 – Lançamento da antologia Aurora Boreal em Reflexos Partilhados (Kafre/Arga Warga)

A isto, junta-se a comercialização do Outras Bandas #7 - Heróis Portugueses II (Tágide) e o meu livro ilustrado Os Animais nos Provérbios (Apenas Livros), duas novidades disponíveis no Mercado do Livro, mais a eventual sessão de autógrafos, por anunciar. Aguardo-vos em Beja!

 

Beja Comics Library has announced the program for the 17th Beja International Comics Festival, which will take place between May 27th and June 12th, in that Alentejo capital. Recognized as one of the best comics events in Portugal, the event brings international talent to the country since 2005, thus creating in Beja one of the main meccas of European comics.
Among the 15 exhibitions, there will also be a small show with illustrations by me (color) and by Daniel Maia (drawings), “Prémio Bandas Desenhadas – The Anthropomorphization of Seasons of the Year,” at Bedeteca. It will also be there, at 12:30, that will take place the winners announcement for the 3rd Comic Books Awards, where I myself am nominated, with the short comic “Lost Child.”

Regarding presentations and book releases, I will be present for the following sessions, on Sunday, the 29/5th:

2:30 pm – Presentation of the graphic novel CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros);

15:15pm – Presentation of the book BD Montijo: Initiation to Sequential Art– Anthology I (City of Montijo);

16:30pm – Release of the anthology Aurora Boreal in Shared Reflections (Kafre/Arga Warga)

Tágide: Novos encontros / New encounters

Como referi anteriormente, os encontros do colectivo Tágide foram retomados no início do ano, após o desconfinamento da pandemia Covid-19. O primeiro encontro informal teve lugar após a inauguração da mostra "BD Montijo: Iniciações," em Fevereiro, e mais recentemente, com o início da parceria entre o Tágide e a associação cultural Ateneu Popular do Montijo, os ateliers criativos passaram a ter lugar num novo espaço, onde planeamos em breve realizar diversas mais actividades.

Para já, os encontros pautaram-se por partilhas de edições recentes e coordenações de iniciativas. Mais notícias em breve!

 

As I mentioned earlier, the meetings of the Tágide collective were resumed at the start of the year, after the end of lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The first informal meeting took place after the inauguration of the exhibition "BD Montijo: Iniciações," in February. More recently, with the beginning of the partnership between Tágide and the cultural association Ateneu Popular do Montijo, the creative workshops were held in a new space, where we plan to soon carry out several more activities.
For now, the meetings were focused on sharing recent editions and coordinating initiatives. More news coming soon!

Tágide: Encontros 2019-2021 / Encounters 2019-2021

Há quase três anos, partilhei a notícia sobre o coletivo Tágide, um grupo informal de artistas que se reuniu na sequência dos meus cursos de banda desenhada, no início de 2019, e que se reuniu continuamente para ateliers criativos e conversas artísticas até 2020, altura em que a pandemia suspendeu os encontros. Desde então, continuámos a reunir-nos online, para diversos chats virtuais, e só recentemente iniciámos os nossos encontros na nova sede, no Ateneu Popular do Montijo.

Almost three years ago, I shared the news about the Tágide collective, an informal group of artists that came together after my comics courses, back in early 2019, and that continuously gathered for creative studios and artistic talks until 2020, when the pandemic put a stop to our encounters. We have since countinued to meet online, for several virtual chats, and only recently began our gatherings in our new headquarters, in Ateneu Popular do Montijo.

CoBrA: Operação Goa – Print

Publisher Ala dos Livros has just divulged their marketing campaign for CoBrA: Operation Goa. For every purchase on their website of this graphic novel by Marco Calhorda (script) and Daniel Maia (art), for which I colored the dust jaked illustration, an exclusive and limited to 60 units illustration print will be offered. I digitally colored this one as well!

III Barreiro IlustraBD – Photos / Fotos

No dia 30 de Abril, o III Barreiro IlustraBD abriu as portas após um hiato de dois anos, devido aos períodos de confinamento mundial. Este novo salão, assumidamente mais contido do que os dois eventos anteriores, voltou a convidar autores locais e a promover apresentações ou lançamentos de novos títulos, oferecendo ao público um certame onde os talentos têm o foco, bem como as suas publicações.

 

Embora não tenha podido estar presente este ano, o álbum CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros), cuja sobrecapa eu colori, esteve em destaque, com uma apresentação pelo co-autor/desenhador Daniel Maia e uma exposição, assim como esteve à venda o meu livro ilustrado Os Animais nos Provérbios (Apenas Livros). As edições vão ter novos destaques em breve.

On the 30th of April, the III Barreiro IlustraBD opened its doors after a two-year hiatus, due to periods of global confinement. This new show, admittedly more restrained than the two previous events, once again invited local authors and promoted presentations or new book releases, offering the public an event where the talents are the focus, as well as their editions.
Although I was unable to attend this year, the graphic novel CoBrA: Operação Goa (Ala dos Livros), whose dust jacket I colored, was featured with a presentation by co-author/designer Daniel Maia and an exhibition, as well as my illustrated book Os Animais nos Provérbios (Apenas Livros), which was on sale there. These editions will have new presentations soon.
