Este é um dos vários exercicios que tenho andado a fazer para me ambientar com a "ferramenta", e com ela tentar potenciar a expressão...  uma tentativa!

Finalmente, a vida deu-me uma oportunidade de prosseguir com a carreira que me escolheu. Há uns dias vi que haveria um workshop em ilustração infantil próximo donde moro e pensei "porque não!?" Esta seria a melhor forma de reciclar conhecimentos e dar-me a coragem para prosseguir com a elaboração de propostas minhas.

Qual foi o meu espanto quando descobri que a formadora do workshop era uma colega minha de faculdade! Foi uma surpresa boa e ao mesmo tempo estranha. A vida tem destas coisas; nem sempre temos a sorte de desenvolver aquilo que gostamos quando queríamos.
Finally, life gave me an opportunity to pursue the career that chose me. The other day I saw that there was an workshop of children illustration going on near where live and I thought "why not!?" This would be the best way to recycle knowledges and give me the courage to proceed with the preparation of my proposals in the area.

Imagine my surprise when I found out that the instructor of the workshop was a colleague of mine from college! It was a nice surprise and at the same time strange. Life has these weird things, sometimes we don't have the luck to pursue what we like when we would want to...

A Arte de Contemplar | The Art of Contemplating

Mais uns exemplares de pequenos (literalmente) esboços da paisagem ribatejana, feitos in loco.
Não perco uma oportunidade de fazer figura de idiota para as populações locais, que acham sempre muito curioso a minha actividade (“...’atão olá, menina! Qu´é que vocemessê está fazendo?” – dizia o senhor, que me apanhou em flagrante, enquanto trazia consigo os ramos das oliveiras que estava a podar...)

Mas não há fotografia que substitua a beleza e dificuldade de desenhar uma paisagem no seu devido lugar... Não se faz ideia de como a fotografia atalha o trabalho de síntese de uma composição, até nos depararmos com uma paisagem à nossa frente, com a sua infindável quantidade de informação que temos de seleccionar e sintetizar...!
Tenho hoje, definitivamente, muito mais respeito pelos pintores que arriscaram queimaduras solares ou de frio, pelo amor à arte!

 

A few more examples of small (literally) Portuguese interior landscape sketches, made in loco (i.e. on the spot).
I never seem to miss an opportunity to make a fool of myself to the local people, who always seem very curious about my activities ("...’howdy, miss! ‘So what in the darn ya doin' there?” – said the farmer, cautching me red-handed, while bringing with him branches from the olive trees that he was pruning...)

But, really, no photo could ever replace the beauty and difficulty of drawing a landscape, live... You wouldn’t guess how a photograph over-facilitates and shortcuts a landscape study, until you’re faced with the real thing in front of you, with its never-ending and overwhelming amount of information to be selected and synthesized…!
Nowadays, I definitely have much more respect for painters who risked sunburn or cold-burn for the love of art!

Cat people | Gatófilos

Estes trabalhos que coloco aqui hoje, fazem parte de uma colecção de estudos que fiz no último ano da faculdade, para a cadeira de Desenho. Fazem parte da pesquisa para um projecto sobre provérbios e gatos a que ainda estou a dar seguimento. Sentia que precisava de me envolver no universo dos de “quatro patas” e muito pêlo, e exprimi-lo em vários médios.
Como pertenço a uma família que deve certamente descender dos egípcios, pelo seu amor a estes tufos de personalidade e dedicação, fiz o retrato da minha irmã e da sua adorada gatinha, que já partiu... O outro, é mais um belo pretexto para estudar a sua textura e hábitos higiénicos!

The works posted here today, are part of a collection of studies that I did in my last year of college, for the Drawing class. They’re part of a project’s research, about cats and proverbs that I have yet to conclude sometime soon. I felt that I needed to get involved in the universe of the "four-legged” and furry ones, and to express it through various mediums.

Given I was certainly born to a family that must have descended from Egyptians, given their love of these clumps of personality and dedication; I made the picture of my sister and her beloved cat, that has departed. .. The other work is another fine excuse to study their texture and hygienic habits!
