Aurora Boreal - Esboços / Sketches

Na sequência da partilha das ilustrações integrais que criei de 2011-2016 para a série Aurora Boreal, editada em quatro livretos entre 2017-2018, mostro agora os esboços e desenhos preliminares que inicialmente fiz para uma Aurora recém-nascida e infantil, e depois a arte conceptual do visual final, após esta ter ascendido ao estatuto de heroína.

Following the sharing of the full illustrations I created from 2011 to 2016 for the Aurora Boreal series, published in four booklets between 2017-2018, I now show the sketches and preliminary drawings that I initially made so as to represent a newborn and infant Aurora, and then the concept art of her final look, after she had risen to heroic status.

Outro conceito desenvolvido foi o das 3 idades, considerando que a personagem tem poderes cósmicos e pode tornar-se imaterial ou transpor dimensões, pelo que não é constante na sua idade cronológica.

Another concept developed was that of the three ages, considering that the character has cosmic powers and can become immaterial or transpose dimensions, so she isn't constant in her chronological age.

Foi após este ponto que comecei a conceber as ilustrações em si, que tinha bem definidas na minha mente desde o início. Foi só uma questão de ajustar composições e refinar detalhes.

It was after this point that I began to come up with the illustrations themselves, that I had well defined in my mind from the beginning. It was just a matter of adjusting the compositions and refining certain details.

Aproveito ainda para partilhar os trabalhos preliminares da prancha-dupla criada para a BD O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos, onde precisei de representar o protagonista, várias personagens secundárias com laços aos mundos místicos, e o artefacto mágico Livro Livre.

I also take the opportunity to share the preliminary works of the double-spread created for The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes, where I had to represent the protagonist, secondary characters with ties to the mystic worlds, and the magic artifact Boundless Book.

Por fim, feito o trabalho, as ocasiões para apresentar as edições nos eventos da especialidade vêem com a oportunidade para autógrafos desenhados para os fãs. Nem sempre me ocorre fotografá-los, mas ficam aqui alguns exemplos...

Finally, once the work is finished, the occasions for presenting the editions at events always see opportunities for signed autographs for the fans. It does not always occur to me to photograph them, but here are some examples...

Reviewing 2017 / Revendo 2017: 28th Amadora BD

Sem ter oportunidade para fazer o devido destaque na sequência do evento, decidi que “antes tarde do que nunca” e eis que partilho a minha participação no 28º Amadora BD, que teve lugar de 27/10 a 12/11.

Neste regresso ao festival, embora sem obra exposta, marquei presença no programa via apresentações no auditório de O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos (Kafre/Arga Warga), com José de Matos-Cruz e Daniel Maia, e Aurora Boreal e O Princípio Infinito: Primeiro Universo – O Bestiário Humano (Apenas Livros), escrito por José de Matos-Cruz, com ilustrações minhas e de Daniel Maia, Renato Abreu e Teotónio Agostinho.

As obras, vendidas no stand da Arte de Autor, que produziu merchandize (canecas) das personagens, tiveram uma agradável procura (num mercado livreiro algo mortiço este ano), dando-me a chance de oferecer autógrafos e privar com os leitores no Fórum Luís de Camões. Acompanhada pelo Daniel Maia, tive o orgulho de contribuir para o festival marcando presença em todos os fins-de-semana, mais feriado!

Without the opportunity to upload a spotlight in the wake of the event, I figured that it's "better late than later" and so I'm sharing here my participation in the 28th Amadora BD, that took place from 27/10 to 12/11.

In this return to the comics festival, although I had no work exhibited, I was present in the event's program through presentations in the auditorium with the new releases The Infante Portugal in Gathered Universes (Kafre/Arga Warga), with José de Matos-Cruz and Daniel Maia, and Aurora Boreal and The Infinite Beginning: First Universe - The Human Bestiary (Apenas Livros), written by José de Matos-Cruz, with illustrations by myself plus Daniel Maia, Renato Abreu and Teotónio Agostinho.
The editions, sold at Arte de Autor stand, which produced merchandize (coffee mugs) of these characters, were in a pleasant demand (in a somewhat feeble book market this year), giving me the chance to offer many autographs and to chat with the readers in the Forum of Luís de Camões. Accompanied by author Daniel Maia, I am proud to have contributed to the festival by attending every weekend, plus holidays!

 

Aurora Boreal: Concept / Concepção

Aurora Boreal é a nova personagem fantástica de José de Matos-Cruz, cujo visual tive a honra de ser convidada a criar. A heroína surge no livro final da trilogia O Infante Portugal, da Apenas Livros (As Sombras Mutantes; 2012), onde participei nas ilustrações interiores, com Daniel Maia. Ali, desenhei o que tratava o imaterial e o cósmico, em especial nos dois últimos capítulos, preparando a passagem de testemunho do Infante para a Aurora. Comecei por a conceber em criança, filha da entidade cósmica Malsão (em A Intíma Capitulação; 2010) e da heroína soviética Oktobraia (em As Tramóias Capitais; 2007), até mais recentemente ilustrá-la já crescida, em seis imagens para a série spin-off que se avizinha e na capa desse livro.

Aurora Boreal e O Princípio Infinito (Apenas Livros) vai ser editado no próximo ano, mas, para até lá se introduzir os leitores neste universo e formalizar a transição do protagonismo, decidiu-se adaptar estes heróis à banda desenhada (em O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos; 2017), num projecto onde também participo, para fazer a “ponte” entre as sagas.

Embora a saga Aurora Boreal pertença ao foro da prosa ilustrada, a verdade é que não temos muitas protagonistas femininas nestes géneros da ficção, daí que quis concebê-la com um aspecto diferente, influenciada por personagens franco-belgas de BD que lia em nova, mas também seguindo um pouco as linhas da sua mãe, Oktobraia, criada pelo ilustrador Zé Manel.
Criar a Aurora foi um desafio estimulante. Em especial porque quis fazê-la em três idades distintas – em criança, jovem adulta e idosa – para assim figurar em três ilustrações diferentes, e cada uma desta precisou de uma caracterização específica, não só a nível de vestuário como também na postura assumida.

Aurora Boreal is José de Matos-Cruz's new fantasy character, whose visuals I was honored to be invited to create. The heroine appears in The Infante Portugal trilogy's final book, from Apenas Livros (The Mutant Shadows; 2012), where I participated with interior illustrations, alongside Daniel Maia. There, I drew images that handled the immaterial and cosmic, especially in the last two chapters, thus preparing the switch from the Infante to Aurora. I began by conceiving her as child, the daughter of the cosmic entity Malsão (in The Intimate Capitulation; 2010) and the heroic soviet Oktobraia (in The Capital Ploys; 2007), until more recently illustrating her all grown up, in six images for the upcoming book spin-off and its respective cover.

Aurora Boreal and The Infinite Principle (Apenas Livros) will be published next year, but in order to better introduce readers to this universe and formalize a transition of protagonism, we decided to adapt these heroes into sequential art (In O Infante Portugal em Universos Reunidos, 2017), a project where I also participate, so as to "bridge" both sagas.

Although the Aurora Boreal saga belongs to the illustrated prose genre , the truth is that we in Portugal have few female protagonists in these works of fiction, hence I wanted to conceive her with a unique look, influenced by french comics characters that I read in youth, but also following a bit along her mother Oktobraia's lines, as created by illustrator Zé Manel. Creating Aurora was a thrilling challenge. Specially because I wanted to do it in three distinct ages – as a child, young adult and old women – to be featured such in three diferent illustrations, and each one of thses needed a specific characterization, not only regarding clothing but also in her stance and postures.

Red Sketches | Esboços vermelhos

Quebrando o longo silêncio, partilho aqui uma selecção de esboços vários que comecei recentemente a fazer com grafite magenta, que achei visualmente interessante porque introduz uma qualidade tonal “quente” aos desenhos, que assim posso levar mais longe em termos de expressividades e modelações. Alguns destes – feitos a partir de fotos e de imagens de video paradas – escolhi pela dificuldade técnica que apresentavam e outros pelo desafio de manter a subtilidade das expressões (sorrisos, olhares...)

Breaking the long radio silence, I'm sharing here a selection of several sketches that I've recently began doing with magenta graphite, which I found visually interesting because it introduces a “hot” tonal quality to the drawings, and that I can then take further regarding depictions and modulations. Some of these – done from photos and still shots – I choose for the technical dificulty they presented and the others for the challenge in keeping the subtility of expressions (smiles, gazes...)

I did these some weeks ago, as a way to train expressions and conveying intensity of differently shaped faces. I love doing these sketches, ever since I discovered the book “Fun with a Pencil” (as mentioned in a previous post).

Fiz estes há umas semanas, como forma de treinar expressões e transmitir intensidades de diferentes formas de faces. Adoro fazer destes esboços, desde que descobri o livro “Fun with a Pencil” (como indiquei num post anterior).

 

Gesture drawing of Animals – Studies | Desenho de Movimento de Animais – Estudos

Following yesterday’s post, here are some more gesture drawings but, this time, with animals’ photo references. I prefer to sketch animals the best and it shows in the output, maybe because of how I “connect” with the image.

Na sequência do post de ontem, aqui ficam mais desenhos de movimento mas, desta vez, com base em fotos de referência de animais. Prefiro esboçar animais acima de tudo e isso nota-se nos resultados, talvez por causa do modo como “conecto” à imagem.

 I'd like to point out that the hardest part of these exercices happens when sketching a group composition instead of a single element, as seen in the elephants image. One really has to abstract whats being seen in order to grasp the whole, in one go, while preventing from detailing one character after another, since that would spoil the connection that they, as group, keep with each other.

Gostava de salientar que a parte mais difícil destes exercicios acontece quando se esboça uma composição de grupo e não um elemento isolado, como nesta imagem dos elefantes. É preciso abstratizarmos o que vemos para apanhar o todo, duma só vez, enquanto evitamos de detalhar uma figura após a outra, dado que isso estragaria a ligação que elas, como grupo, mantêm uma com a outra. 

Gesture drawing with People – Studies | Desenho de Movimento com Pessoas – Estudos

I usually draw a lot more daily than I let on, since warming up and sketching studies are a big part of any graphic artist’s routine, and I’ll try to share a selection of them more regularly. For today, here’s a few gesture drawings taken from a sequence of photo references; these sketches aim to grab the pose and emotion of its gesture/action within a couple of seconds, without lifting the pencil from the paper.

You can see a progression of the warm ups, from looser sketches to more defined ones, which depends on the amount of time I defined to draw each pose. It’s a great but demanding exercise.

Por norma diariamente desenho bem mais do que mostro, visto que fazer aquecimentos e estudos com esboços são uma grande parte da rotina de qualquer artista gráfico, e tentarei doravante partilhar mais regularmente selecções destes. Para hoje, deixo aqui desenhos de movimento feitos a partir duma sequência de fotos de referência; estes esboços visam agarrar as poses e emoções daqueles gestos/acções dentro de breves segundos, sem que se levante o lápis do papel.

Podem ver a progressão dos aquecimentos, desde rabiscos soltos até outros mais definidos, dependo isto do tempo definido para desenhar cada pose. É um óptimo exercício, embora seja exigente.
